HILLSBORO, Ore. — Junior midfielder
Eryn Brown scored two goals in the first 13 minutes of Portland State's match against CSU Bakersfield at Hillsboro Stadium Saturday, leading the Viks (2-3-0) to a 4-0 win over the Roadrunners (1-4-0).
Brown has now scored five goals in the Vikings' last two matches, the most goals in a two-match period by a PSU player in school history. Brown set a single-match record with eight points (three goals, two assists) in the Vikings' last match, a 7-0 win over New Mexico State on Sept. 1.
"Eryn had another big performance today off a couple of tremendous assists," PSU head coach
Laura Schott said. "She is a force when she goes to the goal aggressively."
Brown's first goal came in the sixth minute, after sophomore midfielder
Cori Bianchini won a goal kick near the middle of the field. CSU Bakersfield was playing a high backline at the time, and Brown took advantage, making a run just as Bianchini played the ball forward. Brown's run left her a one-on-one with the Roadrunners' goalkeeper, and Brown beat her with a shot from distance for the score.
Brown scored on a similar play in the 13th minute for her second goal, this time fielding a well-timed pass from sophomore midfielder
Emma Cooney, who had made a long run up the right side of the field.
Brown's two goals stood for the majority of the match, until PSU added two more goals in the final 10 minutes. Sophomore midfielder
Tamia Hasan scored in the 82nd minute for the Viks' third goal, finding the net after a long run from the right side of the field. Bianchini fed Hasan on the play for the assist, giving the sophomore her first multiple-assist match as a Viking.
Junior defender
Kayla Henningsen then capped the scoring for the Vikings with a goal in the 88th minute. Sophomore forward
Lynsey Gaines played Henningsen the ball off a corner on the play, and the junior shot the ball in from 12 yards out.
The Vikings have now scored 11 goals in their last two matches, after only scoring two goals in their first three matches of the season.
Saturday's match was also the Vikings second straight shutout, with sophomore goalkeeper
Caitlin Plese recording her first individual shutout as a Viking. Plese made two saves in the match to preserve the shutout, while her defense limited the Roadrunners' chances, as PSU outshot them 25-11 in the match.
The Vikings look to continue their recent hot play at the University of Hawaii Tournament next weekend. The Viks open the tournament Friday, Sept. 13, at 7:30 p.m. (PT) against Florida Gulf Coast, then face host Hawaii Sunday, Sept. 15, at 8 p.m. (PT).
