HILLSBORO, Ore. — The Portland State women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw with San Francisco Sunday at Hillsboro Stadium.
The Vikings (3-4-1) outshot the Dons (5-2-2) 11-7 in the match, but came away with the draw as both defenses held firm.
USF goalkeeper Madalyn Schiffel made six saves in the match for the Dons, while PSU goalkeeper
Caitlin Plese made three saves for the Vikings.
Despite the score, the Vikings created several offensive chances in the second half of the match, when the team had a strong wind at their backs. The Vikings outshot USF 7-3 in the second half, and recorded just four shots in the other three periods combined.
PSU's best chance for a goal came in the second half, as well, as junior forward
Eryn Brown got lose on a breakaway in the 57th minute. Brown, the leading goal scorer in the Big Sky Conference, drew Shiffel off her line on the play, giving Brown a look at a chip shot from just inside the 18-yard box. Shiffel covered ground quickly, however, and body-blocked Brown's shot to keep the match scoreless.
USF then had its best chance at a goal in the first minute of the first overtime period, as junior forward Mackenzie Krieser put a ball off the right post from just inside the six-yard line. Krieser got the ball on the left post after a long pass into the box, and took a quick touch before sending the ball towards the goal.
Neither team found as good of a chance after that in the two overtime periods.
With the draw, the Vikings earned their first positive result against San Francisco in the all-time series between the two teams. The Dons had won the four previous matches in the series, with their last win coming 2-0 on Sept. 16, 2011.
Sunday's match also continued a solid defensive stretch for the Vikings, as the team has now only allowed one goal in its last five matches. Plese, meanwhile, continued her own strong individual play Sunday, as she now has a 0.20 goals-against average in the Vikings' last five matches, and a .957 save percentage.
Plese and the Vikings now enter the conference portion of their schedule, as Sunday's match concluded the non-conference slate for the Vikings. PSU opens Big Sky play with two matches next weekend, first hosting Northern Colorado Friday, Sept. 27, at 1 p.m. (PT), then hosting North Dakota Sunday, Sept. 29, at 12 p.m. (PT). Both matches will take place at Hillsboro Stadium.
