WAIPAHU, Hawaii — Portland State sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Plese saved 10 shots while withstanding a heavy shot barrage in leading the Vikings to a 2-0 win Sunday over host Hawaii at the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic.

Hawaii outshot PSU 20-5 in the match, including a 16-3 advantage in the second half, and held an 11-0 advantage in corners. Plese kept Hawaii out of the goal, however, and recorded her second shutout of the season amid Hawaii's sizeable shot advantage. Plese's 10 saves also set a new season high for the goalkeeper, and were the most saves by a PSU goalkeeper since Lainey Hulsizer recorded 14 saves against Sacramento State on Sept. 30, 2011.

Plese made most of her saves after the Vikings (3-4-0) took an early lead in the match, as freshman forward Aurora Bodenhamer put the team up 1-0 with a goal in the 25th minute. Hawaii (3-3-0) only led 3-2 in shots at that point, but outshot the Vikings 17-3 over the final 65 minutes of the match.

Plese made eight of her 10 saves after Bodenhamer's goal, including four saves as Hawaii outshot PSU 8-1 over the final 20 minutes of the match. PSU had taken a 2-0 lead by that point, as junior defender Melissa Bishop scored in the 69th minute on an assist from fellow junior Kayla Henningsen.

Sunday's win was the first time this season the Vikings have won while being outshot in a match by their opponent. Additionally, PSU's minus-15 shot differential was the largest negative shot differential in a win for the Vikings since PSU beat Northern Colorado 2-1 on Oct. 10, 2008, while being outshot 23-8.

PSU returns to action Sunday, Sept. 22, when the Vikings host San Francisco at Hillsboro Stadium at 1 p.m.
