Portland, OR - Flavien Davis scored 14 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to lead Montana State to a 70-64 Big Sky Conference win over Portland State at the Stott Center.
Davis hit 10-16 shots from the field and benefited on the pick-and-roll all night as teammate Antonio Biglow gave several of his seven assists to Davis. With the win, Montana State maintains third place in the Big Sky at 7-5.
Portland State dropped its sixth straight game - the longest Viking losing streak in six seasons. PSU is now 5-14 on the year, 3-9 in the Big Sky.
The Vikings got a strong effort from big man Renado Parker, who totaled 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Parker had struggled in recent games, missing one, due to sore ankle, but made 8-12 from the field and 2-2 at the line on Saturday night.
Normally potent on offense at home, the Vikings sputtered to a 5-21 shooting start and trailed 26-11 with 6:10 to play in the first half. The Vikings turned it around though, hitting seven of nine after that. A 10-0 run to close out the half pulled PSU within 33-30.
Defensively, the Vikings' got things together, sparking the run. Aaron Moore blocked three shots late in the half, and Parker made three steals.
The run extended to 14 straight as the Vikings took a 34-33 lead on a Parker jumper two minutes into the second half. It was PSU's first adventage since 6-4 early in the game.
MSU had an answer for every Viking run though, shooting .543 from the field in the second half. A 9-2 rally pushed the Bobcats back to a 49-43 lead a few moments later and PSU never led again.
Twice the Vikings got within one point, but in the final five minutes couldn't make a big play to turn it around.
For the game, the Bobcats out-rebounded the Vikings, 37-27, and shot .473 from the field. MSU's bench also produced 32 points, including 12 from Biglow.
PSU shot .483 from the field, but was only 4-7 at the free throw line for the night. Aaron Moore and Lateef McMullan each scored 11 points for the Vikings.
GAME NOTES: Aaron Moore added seven rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots… MSU swept the season series from the Vikings… PSU is now 5-4 at home… the Vikings go on the road next week, playing at Northern Arizona in a Thursday night game.
