MEN'S TENNIS WEEKEND PREVIEW VIDEO
Portland State Tennis In Action
Both the Portland State men and women's tennis teams are in action this weekend as the men are on their first Big Sky road trip of the year, visiting Idaho State on Saturday, Feb. 16 and Weber State, Feb. 17. Match times slated for 10 a.m. MDT for both events. Meanwhile the women get their first foray into conference play hosting the Montana State Bobcats at Club Green Meadows on Saturday. The contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. PDT.
Scouting the Bengals
The Bengals enter the contest with a 1-2, 0-1 record having defeated Utah State and falling to Utah and Weber State. The Idaho State men's tennis team fell to 1-2 on the season after dropping a very close contest, 4-3, to league rival Weber State in a non-conference match-up on Jan. 20. Idaho State's young players came out with the wins against the Wildcats, headlined by freshman Christian Marian, freshman Jamey Swiggart, and sophomore Austin Miller. Idaho State women traveled to the Boise State Tournament where they faced Boise State and Idaho. The Bengals fell to both teams 7-0. Freshman Kasey Bacon played both matches at the No. 1 spot
Scouting the Wildcats
Weber State comes into the weekend with a 1-4, 1-0 record with its lone win coming against Idaho State. The Wildcats recently fell to Santa Clara with Weber State dropping the doubles point and only tallying one singles victory with Sanjay Goswami doing the honors from the No. 5 spot, defeating Tomasz Soltyka, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. The Wildcats welcome back only five returners to their 2012-13 roster with Caio Poitena rejoining the team as the most productive singles player returning with his 2011-12 total of 10-11, playing primarily from the No. 3 position.
Scouting the Bobcats
Montana State showed its dominance of the Dakotas in its opening weekend, downing South Dakota State, 4-2 and Big Sky opponent, North Dakota, 7-0. Montana State is 2-0 overall and 1-0 in conference. Ellie Crum had a good weekend for the Bobcats as she and temmate Liana Bates went a perfect 2-0 in singles play, from the No. 4 and No. 6 sports, respectively. Charlotte Hjalmarsson played from the No. 1 spot and split, with a 1-1 record last weekend. In doubles play the Bobcats are 5-1 through two matches as the team of Bates and Wena Tsan with a sterling 2-0 mark from the No. 3 spot. Hjalmarsson and Paulina Lopez Trevino played from the No. 1 position, and also went 2-0.
