SCOUTING THE BRONCOS
Boise State is coming off an overtime victory over Big Sky opponent, Idaho State on Sunday. With the 3-2, extra frame victory the Broncos evened its record to 3-3-0. Boise State is paced by its offensive leaders Shannon Schueren (3g-1a-7p) and Katy Oehring (2g-0a-6p). Maddy McDevitt has been the only Bronco who has gotten time in goal this season accruing a 3-3-0 record and holding a 1.97 goals-against-average and a .667 save percentage.
SCOUTING THE AGGIES
The Aggies are coming off an overtime victory against Utah Valley this past Sunday, taking the match 2-1. The victory pushes the Broncos record to 4-1-1. Utah State has gotten offense from a number of players this season as seven different Aggies have recorded goals 2012. Two players pace Utah State in goals with two as Jennifer Flynn and Mari Myashiro have tallied two markers so far this campaign. The Aggies have had two players split time between the pipes this season as Jeannie Woller and Ashlyn Mulford have shared the goalkeeping duties. Mulford holds the edge in minutes played seeing 413 minutes of action and has a 2-0-0 record this season. Woller has a 2-1-0 record in 245 minutes of play. The two have combined for a save percentage of .821 and a .068 goals against average. The Aggies have only surrendered five goals in five matches this season while recording one shutout.
HISTORY LESSON
Portland State has struggled with both Boise State and Utah in its program history, as the Broncos hold a 9-0-1 record against the Viks and the Aggies have a slim 2-1-2 edge against PSU. The last time the Viks faced the Broncos was in 2011 falling in double overtime, 0-1. After outshooting the Broncos 10-9 through the first two halves the Broncos were able to break through in the second overtime period as current point leader Shannon Schueren connected on a header off a pass from Chelsea Robinson in the 106th min. The last time the Viks and Aggies squared off was also 2011 when Utah State got the best of PSU, 1-2.
Ariel Snyder struck first for Portland State in the 36th minute but Utah State scored in the 54th and 58th minute to take the game.
LAST TIME OUT
PSU is coming off a disappointing 0-1 defeat at the hands of Seattle last Sunday. In the team's first road contest you would have thought the Vikings felt right at home coming out with fire and controlling play through much of the first half.
Amanda Dutra had the team's best chance in the stanza taking a corner, feeding senior
Amanda Howie down low near the box who then found Dutra again about 15 yards out and she launched a shot that ricochetted off the cross bar. The Vikings took a 5-3 advantage in shots into halftime. In the second half it was Dutra again came close to giving Portland State its first goal of the match as she slipped a shot past a sprawled out goalkeeper and the ball bounced off the far post. Seattle began to gain momentum after that and found the game-winning goal in the 76th minute to lift Redhawks to the 0-1, win.
FIRING SQUAD
Playing its challenging non-conference schedule has been a tough test for PSU's offense. So far
Kayla Henningsen is the only Viking player to find the back of the next in 2012. That however hasn't been for a lack of trying. Portland State has outshot three of its four opponents this season holding a 47-34 advantage in shots over its foes. Most recently the Vikings out-booted the Ducks 14-8 but were unable to find their way onto the score sheet.
FRESH FACES
PSU lost quite a few seniors to graduation last year and because of that sport a new looking lineup in 2012. Through three games the class of 2016 has had nine starts between four players as
Cori Bianchini,
Torie Morris,
Emma Cooney and
Tamia Hasan have all cracked the starting for the Viks this season. Seven freshman have seen playing time for Portland State this season as well and the newest additions have 25 games played amongst them.
REINFORCEMENTS
Portland State will welcome a key piece to its run at a Big Sky championship this year as sophomore
Daniela Solis has returned from her campaign playing for Mexico at the U 20 World Championships. Solis played several matches including one start against Japan in the group play. The sophomore forward expects to figure prominently in the PSU lineup and is expected to see playing time this coming weekend. Solis has registered one goal and one assist for three points in her PSU career thus far.
