SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS: Seattle is coming off a weekend where the Redhawks split, winning against Eastern Washington, 3-0 but fell to San Diego State, 2-0. Seattle is now 2-2 on the overall. The Redhawks also played an opponent familiar to the Viks, downing Saint Mary's College, 5-1, in the squad's second match of the season.
The team is bolstered by the offense of Taylor Ritzman and Melissa Busque who have eight points (4g, 0a) and (3g, 0a), respectively. Goalkeeper Brianna Smallidge has started all four matches for SU and has allowed five goals and maintains a 1.26 goals against average and .722 save percentage. The Redhawks netminder has also made 13 saves and is 2-2 in 2012. The Red Haws are averaging two goals per game while only allowing 1.25 markers per contest.
HISTORY LESSON:
The Redhawks have had its way with Portland State through the series history holding a 3-0-4 advantage over the Vikings. The last time these two sides met was back in 2011. In that match the Redhawks drew first blood late in the first half as Julie Besegano cashed in on a penalty kick in the 45th minute. PSU was able to knot things up at 1-1 in the second half as Dutra fed
Teal Sigler for the equalizer. While the Vikings kept pouring the shots on it was SU that broke through in the 72nd minute to break the tie, coming in all alone on
Melissa Ferguson scoring low on the keeper. The Redhawks were able to fend off the Viks for the rest of the match to secure the 2-1 victory. Dutra recorded an assist on the afternoon while
Megan Martin had two shots on goal.
LAST TIME OUT
PSU is coming off a hard-fought weekend where it faced two PAC-12 opponents, Oregon State and Oregon. In Friday's contest against the Beavers, Portland State came out with conviction, scoring the match's opening marker as
Kayla Henningsen lofted a shot over the netminder putting PSU up 1-0. The score remained that way for the rest of the first half but the second stanza played out a bit differently. This time it was OSU that was the team that entered the half with fire and broke through in the 72nd and 73rd minute as Brittany Oljiar and Erin Uchaz scored back-to-back. Despite outshooting the Beavers 8-6, PSU fell, 2-1.
In the team's second match against Oregon, PSU dictated play once again creating opportunities offensively but finding it difficult to cash in with a goal. After 49 minutes of scoreless play between the two teams, Kristen Parr took a through ball from Scout Libke and scored the contest's only goal in the 50th minute. For the third consecutive match PSU outshot its opponent, out firing the Ducks, 14-8, falling 1-0 to Oregon.
FIRING SQUAD
Playing its tough non-conference schedule has been a tough test for PSU's offense. So far
Kayla Henningsen is the only Vik's player to find the back of the next in 2012. That however hasn't been for a lack of trying. Portland State has outshot all three of its opponents this season holding a 38-20 advantage in shots over its foes. Most recently the Vikings out-booted the Ducks 14-8 but were unable to find their way onto the score sheet.
FRESH FACES
PSU lost quite a few seniors to graduation last year and because of that sport a new looking lineup in 2012. Through three games the class of 2016 has had nine starts between four players as
Cori Bianchini,
Torie Morris,
Emma Cooney and
Tamia Hasan have all cracked the starting for the Viks this season. Seven freshman have seen playing time for Portland State this season as well and the newest additions have 20 games played amongst them.
