Vikings Drop Conference Dual to Eagles, 7-0

VANCOUVER, Wash.
– The Portland State men's tennis team battled throughout the day but fell to Eastern Washington, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash.
 
“We encountered a very tough team today,” tennis assistant coach Angelo Niculescu said following the dual. “Eastern Washington is probably the second best team that we've played this season, next to Oregon. They have so much depth. Our guys gave it a good effort.”
 
The Vikings (1-7 overall, 0-3 Big Sky Conference) started the day with doubles play but dropped the doubles point by losing two of the three doubles matches. Roman Margoulis and Abhinav Mishra, playing as the Vikings' No. 2 duo, took their doubles match by a score of 8-6.
 
The Vikings turned their attention to singles competition. Margoulis and Mishra playing as No. 1 and No. 2 respectively along with Mitch Somach playing at No. 3 all battled through their first sets and took them the distance.
 
Margoulis battled but dropped the first set by a score of 7-5 and then fell in the second set, 6-3. Mishra took the first set all the way to a tiebreaker which he lost 7-2 to drop the first set by a score of 7-6. He then fell in the second set by a score of 6-3. Somach fell in the first set by a score of 7-5 but then dropped quickly in the second set by a score of 6-1.
 
After dropping the first set by a score of 6-3, Alec Marx played to force a decisive third set and held a 5-2 lead in the second. He then dropped three games brining the second set score to 5-5. After winning the next game, he dropped the following to bring the set to 6-6 sending the second set to a tiebreaker. He then dropped the tiebreaker by a score of 8-6.
 
Nick Fracchia and Zach Lubek fell by scores of 6-1, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-1 respectively.
 
The Vikings have a bye weekend next weekend but return to action in two weeks when they head to Bozeman, Mont. where they will face Montana State – Billings in a neutral site dual and then Montana State in conference play.
