MORAGA, Calif. –
Angela Misa pulled down a career-high 21 rebounds and scored nine points to help Portland State improve to 4-1 on the season with a 71-58 win over Butler Saturday afternoon at the Saint Mary's Hilton Concord Thanksgiving Classic in Moraga, Calif.
Misa's 21 boards was two shy of the Portland State record of 23 set by Linda McLellan against San Jose State in 1980. It is the first time a Viking recorded 20-plus rebounds since McLellan recorded 20 against Montana State in 1981. Through the first five games of the season, Misa is averaging 13.4 rebounds per game.
Sophomore guard
Allison Greene scored a career-high 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting and went 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.
Allie Brock tallied a season-high 12 points while
Kate Lanz added 13 points and
Mikaela Rivard added 11 for the Vikings.
Portland State (4-1 overall), the designated away team, fell behind early by as much as 11 in the first half but a Lanz jumper with two seconds left in the first cut the Vikings deficit to three points at 29-26 going into the break.
Butler (2-4) outscored Portland State in the paint and off turnovers in the first half but the Vikings turned that around in the second half.
The Vikings tied the game for the first time at 33-33 on a Brock jumper just over three minutes into the second half. They then went up by five at 40-35 before the Bulldogs tied it at 42-42.
Portland State started to build a lead late in the half and went up by 10 at 60-50 with 3:26 left. The Vikings increased their lead to as much as 16 points before the Bulldogs hit a late three-pointer to bring the score to 71-58 which is how things ended.
The Vikings outscored the Bulldogs 18-to-6 in the paint in the second half and 12-to-6 off turnovers. They also got 20 points off the bench in the second half alone.
