The Portland State women's basketball team placed three players on the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team for the first time since the 1992-93 season Tuesday.
Laynee Torres-Kahapea repeated as an All-District recipient, while
Kyleigh Brown and
Taylor Moffat joined her as they both received the honor for the first time in their careers.
Torres-Kahapea earned her second All-District honor with a 3.94 GPA in applied health and fitness. She led the Vikings and ranked 15th in the Big Sky Conference with 2.7 assists per game this past season. She started 30 of the team's 31 games while averaging career bests for points (7.2) and rebounds (3.6) per game. She scored in double figures nine times during the season, including a career-high 22 points in the Vikings' season opener at Hawai'i.
Brown, meanwhile, received her first Academic All-District honor after recording a 3.89 GPA in applied health and fitness. Brown led the Vikings with 16.7 points per game, ranking her third in the Big Sky and in the top 100 nationally. Brown scored in double figures in 34 straight games going back to her freshman season, the longest such streak by any Portland State player over the past 20 seasons. She scored 20+ points 10 times, including five times in Big Sky play.
Brown topped the Big Sky Conference with an .881 free throw percentage – the eighth-best single-season average in program history. Brown also led the Vikings with 33.4 minutes played per game, ranking her seventh in the conference.
Moffat came back from an ACL tear as a junior to be a regular starter for the Vikings this past season. She started 22 of her 29 appearances, averaging 5.2 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game while playing 21.1 minutes per game. Academically, Moffat is a 3.93 student in criminology and criminal justice.
All three Vikings easily met the requirements for Academic All-District honors. To qualify academically, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore and have a 3.50 cumulative GPA or higher. In the case of graduate student-athletes, nominees must have earned a 3.50 GPA as an undergrad and a grad student. Athletically, student-athletes must compete in 90 percent of their institution's contests or have started at least 66 percent of the contests.
