ATLANTA — The Portland State women's basketball team should check its mentions as the Vikings received special mention from the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) for the fifth straight season as the association released its Academic Top 25 Tuesday.
The WBCA Academic Top 25 honors the 25 women's basketball teams with the highest GPAs by classification (NCAA D1, NCAA D2, etc.). Outside of those 25 schools, the association also awards special mention to any program with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The Vikings made the Academic Top 25 following the 2020-21 season – finishing tied for 12th with a 3.672 GPA that season – and have earned special mention each of the past five seasons. This year, the Vikings earned special mention with a 3.234 team GPA.
The honor caps a year that saw the Vikings place three players on the CSC Academic All-District team between
Kyleigh Brown,
Taylor Moffat and
Laynee Torres-Kahapea. Those three were also part of the seven Vikings to earn Academic All-Big Sky honors. Joining them were
Katelyn Best,
Sophie Buzzard,
Hannah Chicken and
Kirstine Munk.
