PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland State women's basketball team completed its 2026-27 roster Tuesday with the addition of two incoming freshman in
Maaya Lucas and
Maile Starns.
Â
Lucas, a 5-10 shooting guard, follows her Tualatin high school teammates
Alex Padilla and
Jordyn Smith to Portland State. All three played on Tualatin's 2025 OSAA 6A state title-winning team. Lucas helped lead Tualatin to four straight Three Rivers League titles during her high school career. She earned honorable mention all-state honors as a senior when she was also a first-team all-league selection. She set a single-season school record with 61 three-pointers as a senior.
Â
"Maaya brings great length and athleticism, and is a proven winner at Tualatin," Portland State head coach
Karlie Burris said of Lucas. "Her versatility on offense and the way she gets after it on the defensive end will be huge assets to our program. We are excited to welcome another local product to the Park Blocks."
Â
Starns, meanwhile, comes in out of Legend High School in Parker, Colo. A 5-6 point guard, she led her team to three trips to the state quarterfinals, two to the semifinals and one championship appearance, all of which were the program's first in school history. She earned all-state honorable mention as a senior when she was also an all-league first-team selection. Additionally, she was named to the Nike Tournament of Champions All-Colorado Team in 2026.
Â
"Maile is an explosive guard that can score at all three levels. She will bring great energy and effort from day one. She is a hard-nosed defender that doesn't shy away from a challenge. We are excited to welcome her competitive spirit and grit to the program," Burris said of Starns.
Â
Lucas and Starns will be part of a big freshman class for the Vikings next season. Nine of the Vikings' 15 players will be freshmen between two redshirts and seven true freshmen. They are also part of a 10-member newcomer class that features seven freshmen (five signed in the fall) and three transfers in Smith (Cal Poly Humboldt),
Teagan Colvin (UNLV) and
Sara Barhoum (Oregon).
