TWICE IS NICE... REPEAT CHAMPS!
Portland State entered last weekend's match against Sacramento State needing a win to clinch a Big Sky regular season championship and got just that as the team downed the Hornets 3-1. With the win the Viks secured a share of the conference regular season title with Idaho State and Montana who both went 2-0 last weekend to pull into a three-way tie for the Big Sky's best record. Because of Idaho State's earlier victory against PSU this season, the Bengals will host the 2012 conference tournament as Portland State earns the No. 2 seed, Montana earned the No. 3 seed and Weber State will enter tournament as the final seed of the Big Sky tournament.
SCOUTING THE ROADRUNNERS
CSU Bakersfield enters Wednesday's contest with a 5-9-2 record and is coming off a 1-2, loss to UC Riverside last weekend. The Roadrunners have three matches remaining with all three coming against Big Sky competition (PSU, NAU and SUU). CSU Bakersfield has already faced a prominent Big Sky opponent as they abused Idaho State to the score of 5-1 earlier in the season.
The Roadrunners are paced on offense by Sam Pena who has tallied five goals and five assists for 15 points on the season. Erica Shelton is second on the CSU Bakersfield scoring chart, with four goals, one assists for nine points.
In net the Roadrunners have relied on Tori Ornela who has started 14 games. The netminder is 4-8-2 this season as she maintains a 1.46 goals against average and a .756 saver percentage in 2012.
LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend the Viks controlled its own destiny when it came to its postseason hopes. A win or tie against Sacramento State would secure a tournament berth while a loss would make it difficult for PSU to qualify for a playoff spot. With that scenario in mind Portland State came out quickly against the Hornets and took the momentum as senior
Megan Martin scored the matches opening goal, finding a loose ball off a rebound from
Daniela Solis and giving the Viks a 1-0 lead. Portland State controlled play throughout the first half but it wasn't until the second half when Portland State struck again, this time it was freshman
Cori Bianchini who received a through ball from Martin to put PSU up 2-0. The Hornets stormed back just when it looked like PSU had all the momentum as Elece McBride cut the deficit in half but the Viks received a steady dose of veteran leadership as this time it was
Amanda Howie who broke through to give the Viks its two-goal lead back. Portland State was able to hold onto that 3-1 advantage and with the win clinched a share of the Big Sky regular season title.
HOWIE GOES STREAKING
Senior
Amanda Howie has found her goal-scoring touch at the right time for PSU as she ended the Viks' Big Sky slate in the team lead in goals with four. The Tigard, Ore., native also did it in crunch time for PSU as she recorded all four markers against conference foes. To further illustrate how hot Howie's scoring prowess is right now she is currently on a three-match goal-scoring streak.
SHOOTING GALLERY
Portland State has proved it has the philosophy of shoot first and ask questions later as the team averages 15.6 shots per game. PSU currently leads the conference in shots per game in both overall matches and conference matches. The Viks have also tallied six matches this season where the team has fired 20 or more shots, while 22 is the team's highest total in 2012. The Vikings are 6-2-2 when tallying 15 or more shots while the squad is 5-1-0 when registering 20 or more.
SPREADING THE WEALTH
Portland State is the conference's leading goals and points leader (conference matches only) and a large part of that is due to the fact that the Viks have spread offense through a big part of its lineup. 11 different Viking players have tallied points in 2012 while eight PSU competitors have tallied one or more markers.
Amanda Howie currently leads the team in goals (4), while
Megan Martin leads the team in assists (4) points (3g, 4a, 10p)
OFFENSIVE BEHAVIOR
Portland State entered Big Sky play with an offense that had only tallied five goals but the story changed once they entered its conference slate. Since its opening Big Sky match the team scored 17 markers. PSU has only been shutout twice during its conference slate (UNC and NAU) and has scored two or more goals in five of the teams' nine Big Sky contests. PSU leads the conference (in BSC matches only) in goals (17), points (48) and goals per game (2.00).
GETTING DEFENSIVE
While the PSU has offense sprung to life since the beginning of conference play, you can't deny that the defense has also had a part in the Viks' success this year. The back line, which entered the season as PSU's biggest question mark, has continued its stellar year statistically. Portland State is currently tied for first in (BSC matches only) in goals against with five, and tied for second in goals against average (.54). Likewise Portland State is ranked third in shutouts with five.
FOLLOW THE LEADER
For a majority of the season sophomore
Daniela Solis has led the team in points but senior
Megan Martin burst onto the scene when it mattered most, scoring a goal and tallying an assist against Sacramento State last Friday. Martin is narrowly edging Solis in points as she holds 10 (3g, 4a) while Solis has nine (3g, 3a). Martin is now tied for seventh all-time in PSU history in points with 28 in her career.
