PORTLAND, Ore. / VANCOUVER,Wash. - The Portland State women's tennis team earned its first victory of the season Saturday against Lewis & Clark but was unable to earn victory over UC Davis Sunday to split the weekend. Transfer Yuki Sugiyama was a perfect 4-0 in doubles and singles.

Sugiyama, a native of Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, earned her first spring singles and doubles victories against the Pioneers in dominating fashion. In her singles win, she won 6-1, 6-1 and in doubles with teammate Anya Dalkin, the pair won 8-1.

The only point surrendered against Lewis & Clark came at No. 6 with junior Kylea Gleason battling the Pios Olivia Sweetman. After losing the opening set, Gleason bounced back in the second and was unable to claim victory in the third tiebreaker set, 7-6, 3-6, 1-0.

Against the Aggies, the Vikings opened strong in doubles with Sugiyama and Dalkin taking the No. 1 doubles match, 8-3. With UCD's No. 3 pair clinching their match 8-0, the point rested on No. 2 junior Marti Pellicano and senior Caitlin Stocking. The duo was down early 5-1 but was able to bounce back to within 7-6. The Aggies took the No. 3 match, 8-6, to clinch the doubles point.

The Viks return to action Feb. 4 and 5 for matches in Utah for the team's Big Sky opener against Weber State, followed by a match against Utah State.
