POCATELLO, Idaho – Despite a pair of wins in singles play, the Portland State women's tennis team couldn't pull out a road win at Idaho State, falling 5-2 to the Bengals at Reed Gym Sunday afternoon.
The Vikings fell to 7-7 overall and 3-4 in conference play, while the Bengals improved to 12-7 overall and 6-2 in conference action.
Idaho State claimed an early advantage by securing the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Portland State's top pair of Hana Abdelhamid and Marta Giglio held a 5-4 lead at No. 1 doubles before the point was clinched.
In singles play, the Vikings picked up victories from Giglio and Kasumi Hirayama but fell on the remaining courts. Giglio improved to 10-4 on the season with her win at No. 2, beating ISU's Stefanya Shalakhova 6-4, 6-2. Hirayama claimed her third straight singles win, beating Sydney Morris 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (7) at No. 5.
The Bengals earned a point via retirement at No. 1 and picked up straight-set wins at No. 3 and No. 6. Abdelhamid took the opening set at No. 4 before falling to Emmy Richards 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Portland State will close out the regular season next weekend at Sacramento State, taking on the Hornets on Saturday, April 18 at 11:00 a.m.
