Vikings Second Half Rally Not Enough Against Boise State

BEAVERTON, Ore.
- With a crowd of 483 at Ronaldo Field on the Nike World Campus, Portland State took on Boise State in the Vikings home-opener. With the Broncos taking an early 2-0, PSU rallied in the second half to force overtime but was unable to overcome deficit and fell, 2-1.

Portland State maintained possession of the ball for most of the contest, but the transition from offense to defense cost the Viks two goals. Kati Lucas scored in the ninth minute, while Erica Parks scored in 37th for Boise State.

The Vikings created many chances on offense, starting with Amanda Howie receiving a corner kick from Amanda Dutra in the fifth minute of play. Howie received the line drive and fired a laser that sailed just high of the crossbar.

Following Boise State's first goal, freshman Teal Sigler put the Viks first shot on goal after a long pass from the midfield. She chased the ball into the box and eventually threw her left boot to deflect the ball towards the net. The charging goalkeeper caught enough of the ball with her arms and recovered it on the ground.

Freshman Kimmie Tammen scored the first goal of her career in the 50th minute after a Boise State foul. Junior captain Tish Wise took the free kick and fired it into the box. The Broncos goalkeeper Liz Ruiz was unable to get a hand on it and freshman Ariel Snyder gave the ball quick nudge to Tammen, who fired onto an open goal to cut the Boise State lead in half, 2-1.

The depth of the Vikings bench was shown in the contest as Head Coach Laura Schott played 21 players during the 90 minute match. The team continued it's scrappy play against BSU, particularly showcased from Tammen and Sigler.

Much like the Aug. 20 match against Portland, Portland State came out in the second half possessed on defense to shutout down any offensive threat and keep the ball at the half line of the pitch. After being outshot in the first half, 6-4, PSU out shot the Broncos 10-4 in the second half and in the match, 14-10.

The Vikings fall to 0-2-0 i their opening weekend while the Broncos improve to 1-1-0. The Viks well head to the Las Vegas Invitational, hosted by UNLV, and take on Louisiana-Monroe Aug. 27 and Albany Aug. 29. Live stats will be available at UNLVRebels.com
