Portland State Defense Frustrates No. 5 Portland in 1-0 Loss

PORTLAND, Ore.
- The Portland State Vikings played with blue collars this evening at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex against No. 5 Portland, but fell 1-0. The Vikings were outshot 27-2, in the contest.

In their previous five attempts against UP, Portland State was outscored 24-0. PSU turned a new leaf when the team held the Pilots scoreless for 74 minutes. The evening marks the Viks best outing against the Pilots, surpassing a 2-0 contest at PGE Park in 2004.

Senior Rachel Jarvis, who had not seen action since the beginning of 2008, played spectacularly for PSU in net, making 13 saves in the match.

Jarvis made two spectacular saves in the first 10 minutes of play. The first to her left, that took a stretch effort to stop. After the save, the ball was still in play, but she quickly crawled to smother the second shot. The second came in hard and high, with Jarvis punching the ball into the crossbar to give the Pilots a corner kick.

As Portland maintained possession of the ball on their half of the pitch for the first 45 minutes, Jarvis continued to make the saves including another stretch to the right that led to another Pilot corner. The Lake Oswego native accumulated eight saves in the first half.

The Vikings had a few open field chances but the Pilot defense quickly collapsed and squandered the opportunities between the box and midfield. Junior Esty Geiger took the teams lone shot in the half that sailed right of the goal.

In the first 23 minutes of the second half, the Vikings did not allow the No. 5 team many offensive chances and only surrendered one shot. The Viks disrupted the Pilots passing lanes to minimize the threats.

In the 74th minute, Sophie Schmidt flew in on a Keelin Winters shot to score Portland's lone goal in the contest. Winters fired the shot a high and hard and Jarvis made the initial save. The ball would come free from her grip and Schmidt was quick to clean up the loose ball for the goal.

While UP's size plays an advantage over most teams, the Viks did not let the crosstown rival push them around and played a physical contest. Newcomer Hannah Kimsey was booked in the 82nd minute, after a series of tough tackles throughout the evening.

"We're very excited for Sunday," stated an upbeat Jarvis, "This is the best we've ever done against these girls and I think our forwards will match up a lot better with Boise State Sunday. The last time I played here in 2007, we lost 7-0. I'm much happier with the out come this time."

Coach Laura Schott said "I'm a little disappointed that we didn't score in the match but our defense played great. Our goal defensively was to not allow Portland to get into a rhythm of taking shots. Most of their shots came from outside the high percentage areas and the ones that weren't, were few and far between. We saw some very encouraging things and we're looking forward to Sunday."

Portland State will meet Boise State Sunday at Rinaldo Field on the Nike World Campus. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
