IRVINE, Calif. – UC Irvine used a 15-point swing in the second half and forced visiting Portland State into 20 turnovers to defeat the Vikings, 75-61, on Saturday night in non-conference action at the Bren Events Center.
Mikah Maly-Karros registered a double-double for UCI, scoring 16 points and pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds, while Jade Smith-Williams finished with 20 points and went 11 of 12 at the charity stripe.
The Anteaters used a run midway through the second half to overcome the Vikings, who up until then had led for much game. Portland State took a two-point advantage into halftime and led 43-37 with 14:19 left after a
Shauneice Samms layup. But their next eight possessions resulted in two turnovers and six missed shots, and UC Irvine went on a 15-0 run to take control of the game.
Portland State held UCI to just nine first half field goals and 31 percent shooting to lead 24-22 at the break. The Anteaters didn't miss much in the second half, though, going 18 of 30 from the floor in scoring 53 points over the final 20 minutes.
Samms was a bright spot for the Vikings and continues to shine in her first season at PSU after transferring from the College of Southern Idaho. The junior forward went 8 of 11 from the field, scoring 17 points, while also grabbing nine boards and blocking five shots.
Eryn Jones led the Vikings with 20 points, knocking down four 3-pointers, while
Courtney VanBrocklin finished with 12 points and six assists.
Portland State (4-3) is off until Dec. 11, when they host Loyola Marymount at 1 p.m.
NOTES: Turnovers also proved costly in the game for the Vikings. They committed 20, which led to 20 points for UC Irvine ... Samms set new career-highs at PSU in points, rebounds and blocked shots. Seven of her nine boards came on the offensive end ... Jones had a career-best six rebounds ... UCI (5-3) has won five straight.
