SERIES INFORMATION
All-Time: First meeting
PORTLAND STATE vs. GEORGIA TECH STORYLINES
• Portland State and Georgia Tech meet up for the first time ever.
• The Vikings have faced one other ACC team in their history, losing at Miami, 84-63, on Feb. 16, 1991. But, the Hurricanes were not a member of the ACC at the time and did not join until 2004. So technically this will be the Vikings' first meeting against a team from the ACC.
• Georgia Tech is taking on a Big Sky foe for the first time since easily handling Eastern Washington, 91-36, on Nov. 24, 2001, at a tournament in Atlanta.
• PSU is 3-0 at home this year, while Georgia Tech is 0-1 on the road. The Yellow Jackets have played seven of their 11 contests at home.
• Both teams are ranked in the top 100 nationally in three-point field goal defense. PSU is 69th, holding opponents to 28.2% shooting, while Georgia Tech is 89th, limiting teams to 29% shooting from behind the arc.
• Yellow Jackets senior forward Alex Montgomery will be making a homecoming to the Northwest this week. Georgia Tech also plays at Washington on Dec. 23, and Montgomery is from Lincoln HS in Tacoma. Montgomery is a three-time third team All-ACC player and leads the squad in scoring (14.8 ppg) and rebounding (8.6 rpg). Last season, she was voted as the ACC's Sixth Player of the Year.
GAMEDAY ACTIVITIES: The Portland State Athletic Department will be hosting a Winter Brew Fest in the Stott Center lobby prior to the Georgia Tech game. The event will run from 5:30-7 p.m., and feature seasonal brews from Sierra Nevada, Full Sail and Alaskan. For $3.00, individuals 21 and over will receive four drink tokens.

LOOKING AHEAD: After playing seven of their first 10 games on the road, the Vikings are looking forward to getting back to the Park Blocks, where they are 3-0 this season. Tuesday's matchup against Georgia Tech kicks off a three-game homestand for the Viks. After playing Tuesday, the Viks host cross-town rival Portland the following Tuesday (Dec. 28) at 7 p.m., before hosting Corban College on Monday, Jan. 3, at 7 p.m.
PORTLAND STATE – GEORGIA TECH SERIES NOTES: Tuesday's matchup between the Vikings and Georgia Tech will be the first ever. PSU has technically never faced a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference, but did lose at Miami during the 1990-91 season. The Hurricanes didn't join the ACC until 2004, though. Georgia Tech is making its second trip to the Northwest in the past three seasons. They traveled to Portland for the Pape Jam at the Rose Garden on Dec. 13, 2008, defeating Oregon 74-59. This will be the Yellow Jackets' first meeting against a Big Sky team since they knocked off Eastern Washington, 91-36, on Nov. 24, 2001.
WINNING AT HOME: Over the past three-plus seasons with
Sherri Murrell as the head coach, the Vikings have posted a 39-7 overall record (.848) and 20-4 Big Sky mark (.833) inside The Stott Center. Even more impressive, Portland State has won by an average of 13.9 points at home overall and by 15.5 points in conference games. The Vikings have won 27 contests by a double-digit margin, including 11 victories by at least 20 points. This year, PSU is 3-0 at home and winning by an average of 21.3 points. Additionally, for the fifth straight season the Vikings posted a winning record at home during conference play in 2009-10. They went 6-2 last season at the Stott Center, after going 7-1 in each of the previous two seasons. In 2006-07 they were 6-2, and in 2005-06 they were 4-3.
THE STREAK CONTINUES: In addition to setting two school single-season three-point records, the Vikings also finished last year riding a 62-game streak of making at least one three-pointer. Now the streak is up to 72 games after they have made one in every game this season. PSU had a 96-game streak from 2004-05 to 2008-09, but went 0 for 12 from three-point range in the second game of the 08-09 season at Binghamton. During their current streak, PSU has actually made at least two in every game. Three times last season the Vikings made 10 or more treys.
THREE-POINT SHOOTERS: During
Sherri Murrell's time at Portland State, the Vikings have not been afraid to shoot the three-ball. Portland State averaged 22.1 three-point attempts last season on their way to setting a new school record with 728 attempts, and so far this year they are putting up 18.8 attempts per game. The Viks have tallied more three pointers made than their opponent in 8 of 10 contests this season.
NATIONALLY RANKED: Junior
Eryn Jones and sophomore
Courtney VanBrocklin are the only Vikings to be ranked in the top 100 in the NCAA statistical rankings. Jones is 40th in 3-point field goal percentage (43.5%) and 60th in assists per game (4.7), while VanBrocklin is 73rd in free-throw percentage (84.2%). As a team, PSU 68th in three-point field goals made per game (6.5), 69th in 3-point FG defense (28.2%) and 74th in three-point field goal percentage (34.6%).
VALENTINE PASSES 1,000: On November 27, senior forward
Kelli Valentine became the 14th player in Portland State history to surpass the 1,000-career point barrier when she scored 24 against Tulane. Valentine entered the contest needing nine points but matched her career-high with 24. She is now at 1,076 points. Valentine is also close to joining the 1,000-point, 500-rebound club at PSU, which would make her the 10th player in Viking history to accomplish the feat. Valentine needs nine more boards to reach the barrier and when she does it, it will mark the third time in the past four seasons that a Viking has joined the elite club. Kelsey Kahle joined it in 2007-08 as a junior, and Claire Faucher became a member last season.
INSTANT IMPACT: Two of Portland State's newcomers this year have had instant impacts on the program. Junior forward
Shauneice Samms, a transfer from the College of Southern Idaho, is leading the conference in field goal percentage (61.5%) and ranks fourth in blocked shots (1.3 bpg), while ranking second on the team in rebounding (5.0 rpg) and fourth in scoring (8.2 ppg). Guard
Courtney VanBrocklin, a sophomore transfer from Boise State who redshirted last year, came off the bench in the season opener at Washington to score the Vikings' first nine points of the game. She has since started every game and leads PSU in scoring (13.4 ppg), rebounding (6.2 rpg) and steals (1.7 spg). In the Big Sky she ranks sixth in scoring and eight in rebounding. She also has recorded both of PSU's double-doubles this year.
MONEY AROUND THE BASKET: Only once in their recorded history have the Vikings had a player finish the year shooting better than 60 percent, and that came way back in 1977-78 when Lynn Holzfuss shot 63.3 percent (69 of 109). While there is a lot of season left, junior
Shauneice Samms is looking like she might break that barrier. Through 10 games, Samms has been money around the basket, shooting 61.5 percent (32 of 52), which leads the Big Sky Conference.
