PORTLAND, Ore. – Courtney VanBrocklin scored 20 points and Kelli Valentine added 18 more as Portland State defeated visiting Loyola Marymount in convincing fashion, 65-39, on Saturday afternoon at the Stott Center.

Portland State led wire-to-wire in improving to 3-0 at home this year and 5-3 overall. LMU dropped to 5-5 with the loss.

PSU was dominating on both ends of the floor and on the glass. The Viks shot better than 44 percent, held LMU to under 25 percent shooting and outrebounded them by 18. The Lions' 39 points marked the fewest by a PSU opponent since Jan. 25, 1997, when Portland State defeated Eastern Washington, 48-36.

The Vikings scored the first seven points of the game and just over ten minutes in they held their first double-digit lead, 19-8, after a VanBrocklin three-pointer.

Loyola Marymount cut the lead to seven, 24-17, on a layup by Mackenzie Kerins with 4:14 left in the half, but PSU scored the next 11 points and eventually went into intermission up 35-19.

Portland State didn't let up coming out of the break. Kelli Valentine rebounded a missed three-point attempt by Eryn Jones and laid it back in, before Shauneice Samms found a wide open Lexi Bishop underneath the hoop for another close bucket, making it 39-21.

With 13:57 remaining, Valentine buried a jumper and Portland State led 45-25. The Vikings then went on a 11-4 run, capped by a Jones' 3-pointer, and took their largest lead of the contest, 56-29, at the 9:22 mark. LMU never got closer than 19 the rest of the way.

VanBrocklin scored 13 of her points in the first period and finished the game 8 of 11 from the floor, including 3 of 3 from behind the arc.

Valentine just missed a double-double as she pulled down nine rebounds to help the Vikings outrebound LMU 53-35. The 18-rebound differential was the largest for Portland State since Jan. 12, 2008, when they outrebounded Idaho State by 21.

Also for PSU, Jones dished out a career-high nine assists, Kelly Marchant had seven rebounds, and Samms blocked three shots.

Loyola Marymount got 12 points and seven boards from Candice Nichols. The Lions shot just 24.2 percent and went 0 of 15 from three-point range.

NOTES:
The last time a PSU opponent failed to make a three-pointer was Washington in last season's opener on Nov. 14 ... Valentine went 8 of 12 from the field and PSU shot 27 of 61 (44.3%) ... the Vikings have won their first three home games by an average of 21.3 points.
