SMU Beats Vikings 69-53 In Tournament Opener

- Forwards Papa Dia and Robert Nyakundi combined for 39 points and 19 rebounds in leading Southern Methodist to a 69-53 win over Portland State in a first-round game at the SMU Invitational.

The Vikings shot just .409 from the field and .278 from three-point range as they dropped to 1-1 on the season. SMU improved to 1-2.

The Mustangs jumped to a 17-4 lead in the first 5:44 of the game and the Vikings never had the firepower to make a comeback. PSU never got closer than eight points and trailed by double digits the entire second half.

Dia scored 20 points with nine rebounds, while Nyakundi had 19 points and 10 boards.

PSU got only 22 points from its starters and found its only spark from Charles Odum, who scored 17 points off the bench. Odum hit 6-10 from the field, 2-4 from distance and 3-4 at the line.

Paul Guede added seven points and a career-high eight rebounds for the Vikings.
