Portland State Blanks Eastern Washington 3-0 in Big Sky Opener

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland State women's soccer team exploded with offense this evening as they opened its Big Sky register with a 3-0 shutout victory over Eastern Washington in its first ever match in “The Dam Cup” series.

The Vikings offense started firing right out of the gate as they outshot Eastern 9-4 in the first half and 4-0 on goal. In the 11th minute of play, an EWU defender drew a handball inside the Viks box and setup a PSU penalty kick. Sophomore Amanda Dutra would take the kick and convert to give Portland State an early 1-0 lead.

20 minutes later, freshman Eryn Brown would score to give the Vikings a 2-0 advantage. Brown moved the ball just outside the goal box and dished it to transfer Melissa Trammell, who drew the defense and allowed Brown to slip inside the box uncovered. Trammell swept the ball to Brown and the freshman put away her second score of the year.

Trammell, a native of Yakima, Wash., filled the stat sheet as she scored a goal and an assist in the contest and took three shots, two on net. Her goal came seven minutes after the half as she headed a ball into the back right corner of the net on a header pass from Frankie Ross.

Ross registered her fourth assist of the season and is now tied for second all-time at Portland State with 11 helpers in her career.

The Big Sky opening win puts the Vikings at 5-7-1 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play. The win also gives Head Coach Laura Schott her 20th career victory, becoming only the third coach in school history to achieve that mark.

Portland State will return to action Sunday against Montana at Hillsboro Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
