Soccer Battles To 1-1 Draw With Utah Valley

Box Score (HTML)

HILLSBORO, Ore. –
Portland State and Utah Valley battled to a 1-1 draw in non-conference soccer action on Friday at Hillsboro Stadium, giving both teams their first tie of the season.

The Wolverines (3-7-1) controlled the ball for much of the contest, but only outshot the Vikings, 21-19. Utah Valley had a 12-5 edge in shots on goal.

Just over five minutes in, Portland State (4-6-1) got on the scoreboard when Utah Valley's Lauren Bluth headed the ball in for an own goal. Bluth and goalie Hailey Brown converged on the ball eight feet in front of the goal, trying to keep it away from a Vikings player, but Bluth headed the ball back into the net.

The score remained in Portland State's favor until UVU's Ashley Burdett evened it up in the 84th minute. Burdett, who had come in just moments earlier, received a pass from the right sideline from Kaitlyn Thomas, corralled it in and then fired a shot across her body with her right foot past a diving Lainey Hulsizer.

PSU went on the offensive in the closing minutes of regulation as Hannah Kimsey and Emily Rohde both fired shots on goal, only to have them saved by Lauren Sack.

In the first overtime, Rohde fired a shot that hit the crossbar and came down just inches outside of the goal. It was the Vikings lone shot on goal during the two OT periods.

Hulsizer, who came on in goal after the half, made several outstanding stops over the final 20 minutes, notching six of her eight saves in the two extra periods. Perhaps her best play came with just four seconds left when Utah Valley's Haley Curtis broke free down the left hash and fired a shot on goal. Hulsizer was able to make the save and preserve the tie.

Despite being denied the victory, PSU Head Coach Laura Schott was pleased with the way her team played.

"I thought we battled through some adversity and played extremely hard today," said Schott. "I'm proud of their performance even though it didn't result in a win."

Schott was also complimentary of sophomore Carlie Martin, who made some spectacular defensive stops throughout the match.

"She did an excellent job today of reading what they were trying to do and who they were trying to get the ball to and then breaking it up."

The Vikings now hit the road to face SeattleU on Sunday. Game time is 12 p.m.
