MONMOUTH, Ore. — The first day of the John Knight Twilight ended abruptly after lightning struck in the area around McArthur Field. Some events got pushed to Saturday as a result. That forced an adjustment in the schedule for some Portland State track & field athletes. But the other Vikings were sure to light up the track themselves earlier in the day Friday.
Â
Princess Fletcher provided an overall top 10 mark in the women's hammer to highlight the day for the Vikings. Fletcher and
Avonlea Edwards led the Vikings in the event, with Edwards eighth and Fletcher ninth in the women's hammer. Edwards, who already ranks fifth all-time in the hammer, led the pair with a throw of 135-04 (41.63m). Fletcher followed at 133-05 (40.67m), moving her up to 10th in the overall top 10 and sixth in the freshman top 10.
Â
James Timmins nearly provided another overall top 10 mark Friday. Timmins, who has only run once previously this outdoor season, shaved a quarter of a second off his personal best in the 400 hurdles with his finish in 55.69 seconds. That put him outside of the overall top 10 by just 0.17 seconds.
Â
Ashley Peterson also set a personal best on the women's side of the 400 hurdles. Peterson placed third overall while shaving more than a second off her personal best with her finish in 1:04.12. Peterson re-takes the team-lead in the 400 hurdles, as a result, a position she's traded back-and-forth with
Savannah Beasley over the past three weeks. Beasley had taken the lead with a time of 1:04.52 at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational last week.
Â
Beasley was instead focused on the 200 meters Friday where she joined four other Viking women in setting a new personal best.
Ocean Rideout led that group, placing third overall while shaving more than half a second off her previous best with her finish in 25.30 seconds. Beasley followed in 25.56 seconds, shaving nearly a full second off her previous outdoor best and setting an overall best by one-hundredth of a second.
Norhan Abdel Halim (26.64),
Akanesi Latu-Alves (27.02) and
Lydia Medina (27.19) followed with personal bests of their own.
Â
Aidan Sweeney and
Carson Schall both set personal bests on the men's side of the 200 meters with their finishes in 23.17 and 23.28 seconds.
Zach Payne and
Dillon Brost led the Viking men in 22.23 and 22.36 seconds, respectively, with Brost's time representing a new seasonal best by six-hundredths of a second.
Phoenix Bakkum also tied his seasonal best with his finish in 23.39 seconds.
Â
The women's 1,500 meters was the only other track event to be completed for the Vikings.
Talise Wapsheli set a second straight personal best at the distance, finishing in 5:22.95.
Â
Jackson Mathers added another personal best from the field events. Mathers placed fifth in the men's triple jump with a mark of 45-06.25 (13.87m). That was 1.25 inches over the mark he set last year at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships.
Â
Carter Green also set a personal best in the javelin with a throw of 147-07 (44.99m). That was 17 inches farther than his previous best and came as Green improved dramatically from throw-to-throw Friday. Green added eight feet from his first to second attempt, then put on another six feet for his personal best on his third attempt.
Â
Henry Glad didn't come away with a personal best in the javelin but still put down a solid mark of 178-01 (54.28m) while placing eighth overall. It was Glad's second time over 178 feet this season and trailed his personal best from last year's Big Sky Outdoor Championships by only 10 inches. Glad had two other throws over 175 feet before setting his best mark of the day on his sixth and final attempt.
Â
Events stopped Friday after two of six scheduled sections of the men's 1,500 meters had been run. The rest of the men's 1,500 meters will now be run Saturday, along with the men's steeplechase, which
Tom Thake was scheduled to run for the Vikings.
Â
All events will resume at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
