SEATTLE, Wash. — Jack be nimble, Jack be quick,
Jack Macdonald gave the field a lick. The freshman sprinter posted an overall win in the 200 meters Friday to lead the Portland State track & field program on the first day of the Husky Classic.
Â
Macdonald won his heat by more than a second, while finishing seven-hundredths of a second faster than No. 2 overall finisher, Daniel Earles from Trinity Western. Macdonald's time represented an indoor best in the 200 by six-hundredths of a second, bettering a time he set at the Silver & Blue Invitational on Jan. 10.
Â
The 200-meter win continues a standout season for the freshman. He set the school record in the 300 meters with a time of 34.94 seconds at the Inland Northwest Invitational on Jan. 31. He also ranks in the top 10 all-time in both the 60 (6th) and 200 (5th) meters.
Â
Macdonald's win fulfilled his head coach's directive going into the meet, which was to compete. Head coach
Joseph Blue said in the leadup to the meet that beyond times, he'd be looking for how his athletes competed against the best field they've faced to date.
Â
Savannah Beasley and
Aidan Sweeney showed themselves competitive within the women's and men's 60-meter hurdles. Both hurdlers set personal bests on their respective sides of the event for the fourth straight meet.
Â
Beasley shaved nine-hundredths of a second off her personal best on the women's side of the hurdles while finishing in 9.29 seconds. Sweeney, meanwhile, knocked two-hundredths of a second off his personal best, winning his heat and finishing third overall in 8.53 seconds. Sweeney now sits only two-hundredths of a second outside of the all-time top 10 at Portland State.
Â
Beasley returned to the track for the women's 200 meters, joining a group of four out of five Vikings who set an indoor or overall best in the event.
Sienna Rosario led the Vikings with a time of 25.97 seconds, while the four Vikings who followed all set new bests.
Â
Ocean Rideout led that group with her time in 26.07 seconds, shaving more than a half a second off the personal best she set at the Portland Indoor 1 on Jan. 25. Beasley followed in 26.23 seconds, shaving just under half a second off the personal best she set at the Portland Indoor 1.
Ashley Peterson finished just three-hundredths of a second behind Beasley in 26.26 seconds, setting an indoor best by close to three-tenths of a second. Freshman
Norhan Abdel Halim closed out the Viking women's 200-meter group in 27.84 seconds, setting an overall best by just under three-tenths of a second and a seasonal best by close to four-tenths of a second.
Â
Two out of the three Vikings in the men's triple jump also set indoor bests in the event.
Edward Niyongere led the Vikings, placing third with a best jump of 46-04.25 (14.13m).
Jackson Mathers and
Damien Parrow followed at fifth and eighth, respectively, as both set an indoor best in the event. Mathers added three feet to his indoor mark in the triple jump while finishing with a best jump of 44-08.75 (13.63m). Parrow, meanwhile, added close to two feet to his indoor best in the event with a mark of 42-00.75 (12.82m).
Â
Mathers set another indoor best in the men's high jump later in the day. Mathers cleared three bars, including first-attempt clearances at 1.80 and 1.85 meters, before missing on all three attempts at 1.90 meters. His mark of 6-00.75 (1.85m) added more than two inches to his indoor best.
Â
Friday's events also included the first distance medley relays for both the Viking men and women. The women were first on the track, with the foursome of
Hannah Butterfield, Peterson,
Addison Capozzi and
Irina López placing fourth in 12:45.04.
Â
Ari Smith,
Zach Payne,
Amir Ahmed and
Luke Gillingham took the baton for the Viking men, placing fifth in 10:19.18. The foursome – which featured two true freshmen in Smith and Payne, as well as a redshirt freshman in Gillingham – moved up to ninth all-time at Portland State with their finish.
Â
The Vikings continue at the Husky Classic tomorrow, starting at 10 a.m. The women's shot put and women's long jump open the day for the Vikings in the field, while the prelims of the women's 60 meters will open the day on the track.
