SEATTLE, Wash. — Rip Van Winkle would love
Isaiah Cadengo and
Emma Stolte. He could sleep for however long and when he'd wake up, Cadengo and Stolte would still be setting top 10 marks for the Portland State track & field program.
Â
The pair set top 10 marks in the men's 200 and women's 3k, respectively, Saturday to lead the Vikings at the UW Preview. They come a week after they each set a pair of top 10 marks at the Silver & Blue Invitational, giving them three in an indoor season that's only two weeks old.
Â
Cadengo bettered his mark in the 200 meters, finishing a tenth of a second faster than he did last week while winning the event in 21.81 seconds. The overall win came by one-hundredth of a second over Vincent Atilano of Cal Poly, while Cadengo won his heat by more than a full second.
Â
The freshman remains No. 4 in the overall top 10 at Portland State and No. 2 in the freshman top 10 in the 200 meters. He added another freshman top 10 in the 60 meters, while leading the Vikings in the event in 7.15 seconds. That moved Cadengo into a tie with Mitchell Gable for 10th in the freshman record book.
Â
Stolte, meanwhile, went higher, jumping all the way up to second all-time in the women's 3k. Stolte, who finished second in her heat and sixth overall among an elite field, shaved close to 40 seconds off her 3k personal best while finishing in 9:17.97. That ranks her second only to Katie Camarena's school record of 8:57.08 that qualified Camarena for nationals in 2022.
Â
Stolte also moved up to second all-time behind Camarena in the 800 meters last week, a day after she opened her season with a facility record and the No. 5 mark all-time in the mile.
Â
The rest of the Vikings showed their own improvements Saturday, fulfilling head coach
Joseph Blue's directive to get better each week.
Â
Hurdlers
Savannah Beasley and
Aidan Sweeney got that started for the Vikings. Beasley, the first Viking on the track at Dempsey Indoor Saturday, shaved a tenth of a second off the personal best she set last week in the women's 60-meter hurdles. Beasley finished in 9.56 seconds and has now shaved just under seven-tenths of a second off the personal best with which she came into the season.
Â
Sweeney, meanwhile, qualified for the final of the men's 60-meter hurdles with a personal best of 8.59 seconds. He was near that time again in the final, when he placed sixth overall in 8.61 seconds.
Â
Sienna Rosario was another of the Vikings' morning group to set a personal best. Rosario shaved four-hundredths of a second off the mark they set in the women's 60 meters last week at the Silver & Blue Invitational, finishing in 7.88 seconds Saturday.
Â
Freshman
Natalie Fisher bettered her mark in the shot put from a week ago. Fisher added two inches to her personal best with a throw of 40-02.00 (12.24m) on her third and final attempt of the day. Fisher remains ranked third in the freshman top 10 in the shot put. She needs two more inches now to match Sydney Johnson for second in the freshman record book.
Â
Hannah Butterfield nearly added another freshman top 10 while running with teammate
Irina López in the women's 800 meters. López led the pair in 2:17.82, setting a collegiate best in the indoor 800 by six-tenths of a second. Butterfield followed in 2:19.44, missing out on a freshman top 10 mark by three-hundredths of a second.
Â
Ashley Peterson shattered her time in the women's 400 meters from a week ago. Peterson shaved more than two seconds off her season opener while setting an indoor best with her finish in 58.63 seconds.
Â
The Vikings will stay local for next week's meet, as they compete at the Portland Indoor 1 on Jan. 25 at the University of Portland's Chiles Center.
Â
The proximity to home doesn't change the message from Blue. But maybe Rip Van Winkle can get another week's nap in.
