BERKELEY, Calif. — Amir Ahmed ran himself into the all-time top 10 in the men's 800 meters Saturday at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, highlighting the Vikings' third different meet in as many days in the Bay Area.
Â
Ahmed finished sixth overall in 1:52.15 in the men's 800 meters. That shaved more than three-quarters of a second over his previous best that he set four weeks earlier at the L&C Electric Forest Opener.
Â
Ahmed's previous best put him just outside the top 10. He fully entered the all-time rankings Saturday, moving up to ninth at Portland State. Ahmed represents the first new entrant to the men's 800-meter top 10 since Chase Lovercheck entered as a freshman in 2019.
Â
Dieumerci Migani would have moved into a tie for third all-time in the men's 100 meters if not for his school record at last year's Big Sky Outdoor Championships. Migani finished in 10.59 seconds Saturday, nearly two-tenths of a second faster than his time yesterday at the Stanford Invitational.
Â
Migani's finish Saturday represented his second-best mark as a Viking. It's his best mark ever at sea level, as his school record time of 10.51 seconds at last year's Big Sky meet came at nearly 5,000 feet in Bozeman, Mont.
Â
Daniel Coppedge, like Migani, would have posted a top 10 mark if not for an earlier meet this season. Coppedge would have set the school record in the men's hammer if not for his mark two weeks earlier at the Oregon Preview. Coppedge put three attempts past the record he surpassed earlier this season, topping out at 179-03 (54.64m) on his sixth and final attempt of the day.
Â
Ashley Peterson recorded her second-best mark in the women's 400 meters while placing ninth overall in 58.18 seconds. Peterson's time represented an improvement of more than seven-tenths of a second over her 400-meter time at yesterday's Stanford Invitational.
Â
Henry Glad also posted his second-best mark of the season in the men's javelin. Glad placed sixth overall with a throw of 166-07 (50.79m), better than all but his mark of 171-10 (52.37m) at yesterday's Stanford Invitational.
Â
Two Vikings set freshman top 10 marks Saturday.
Sienna Rosario set one in the women's 100 meters, finishing in a seasonal-best 12.50 seconds. Rosario supplanted her classmate
Aida Wheat for 10th in the freshman rankings in the 100 meters.
Â
James Timmins posted the other freshman top 10 mark with a finish in 15.96 seconds in the men's 110-meter hurdles. Timmins moved up to sixth in the freshman rankings with the mark, which represented a new seasonal best by four-tenths of a second.
Â
Elsewhere,
Noah Meucci added four feet to his personal best in the men's discus, throwing 140-05 (42.81m) on his first attempt of the day.
Â
Edward Niyongere recorded an outdoor best in the men's triple jump with a mark of 43-06.00 (13.26m). The mark was well short of his overall best in the event, however, as Niyongere set his indoor best at 47-11.25 (14.61m) at the UW Preview in January.
Â
The Vikings will now return to Oregon for their next two meets, starting with the John Knight Twilight in Monmouth, Ore., next Friday and Saturday.
