EUGENE, Ore. — Chasing history in a venue full of it, it's appropriate that the Portland State track & field athlete with perhaps the most history with Hayward Field produce a highlight for the Vikings Saturday on the final day of the Oregon Preview.
Â
Tori Forst, who competed at Hayward Field for Tigard High School at the 2022 and 2023 OSAA 6A State Championships, claimed an overall win for the Vikings in the women's 200 meters Saturday. Forst finished in a personal best of 24.40 seconds, edging Oregon State's Jada Hurley at the line to win by six-hundredths of a second.
Â
Forst's time put her just two-hundredths of a second behind the current No. 10 time in the 200 meters, which Ena Shemi set at 24.38 seconds in 2004. Expect Forst to challenge for a spot in the top 10 later in the season.
Â
Deghlan Johnson cracked the top 10 in the men's 400-meter hurdles while finishing second in his heat and sixth overall in 55.15 seconds. Johnson's time moved him up to ninth all-time in the event. He's only the third new entrant to the top 10 in the last 15 years, joining Kamal-Craig Golaube (54.44 seconds in 2018) and Jordan Gloden (55.87 in 2022), who he ironically knocked out of the top 10.
Â
James Timmins also set a new personal best in the 400-meter hurdles with his finish in 55.96 seconds. That moves Timmins up to fourth in the freshman rankings for the event.
Â
Both Forst and Johnson set other bests earlier in the day. Forst set a seasonal best in the 100 meters, placing fourth overall in 12.07 seconds. That shaved seven-hundredths of a second off her opening time of the season from the L&C Electric Forest Opener on March 8. Johnson, meanwhile, set a new personal best in the 110-meter hurdles while placing seventh overall in 15.10 seconds.
Â
Elsewhere,
Emma Stolte and
Ania Kapustka both followed up heat wins in the 1,500 meters Friday with two more heat wins for the Vikings, this time in the 800 meters.
Â
Stolte, who has now won three of her four races so far during the outdoor season, had to fight for her victory. She pushed into the lead with about 250 meters to go but then lost it as Eastern Washington's Kaiya Sollie passed her going into the final 100 meters. Stolte waited patiently, making a counter move down the home straightaway to pass Sollie for the win. She ended up winning by close to a second, as she powered past Sollie to the line in 2:13.47. Stolte's time gave her a new outdoor best by more than three seconds while it also beat her indoor best from the UW Invitational earlier this season by more than a second.
Â
Kapustka, meanwhile, followed the same tactic that led to her victory in the 1,500 meters Friday. She pushed the pace from the front, taking the lead early and then not looking back as she won by more than a second in a new collegiate best of 2:18.15.
Â
Irina López led through the first lap while running in the same 800-meter heat as Stolte. The freshman faded over the second lap but still finished in a new collegiate best of 2:16.85. That moved López up to ninth in the freshman rankings.
Â
Mason Becker finished on the podium in the long jump, placing third in a new PSU best of 22-08.00 (6.91m). Becker's mark came on his fourth attempt of the day, as he jumped up from eighth in the standings to third.
Â
Dieumerci Migani shaved more than three-tenths of a second off his personal best in the 200 meters while finishing 13th overall in 22.30 seconds.
Â
The award for Busiest Viking of the Day went to
Dillon Brost, who ran the 200 and 400 meters while anchoring the Vikings' 4x400-meter relay. Brost finished the 200 and 400 in 22.74 and 52.38 seconds, respectively, while he led the Vikings' relay team to a finish in 3:25.80.
Â
The Vikings will take next weekend off from competition before returning for three meets across the Bay Area over the April 4-6 weekend. The Vikings will compete at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, April 4-6, in Berkeley, Calif., as well as the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, April 5-6, in San Francisco, Calif., and the Stanford Invitational, April 5-6, in Stanford, Calif.
