Season Wrapup: Vikings Finish 19-13, Place Third In The Big Sky Conference

The Portland State Vikings had one of its best basketball seasons in its 29-year Big Sky Conference era in 2024-25. The Vikings finished the year at 19-13, tying for the fourth-most wins as a Big Sky program. PSU was 11-7 in the Big Sky, placing third in the league. Despite being knocked out in the quarterfinals of the Big Sky Tournament, PSU had many accomplishments over the course of the year.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
  • Portland State was 19-13 on the season, tying for fourth-most wins and fourth-best winning percentage in the Big Sky Conference era. It was the program's most wins since a 20-14 mark in 2017-18... PSU was 13-1 at home, tying for the best home record during the Big Sky era... the Vikings won their last 11 in a row at home and have won 12 straight Big Sky home games dating to the 2023-24 season... PSU is 23-4 at home over the past two seasons.
  • SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott was named Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Year and to the All-Big Sky defensive team. He ranked second in the Big Sky in blocked shots (1.7), averaged 7.6 rebounds to rank third, made 24 steals and scored 7.6 points on .669 shooting. • SR F Terri Miller Jr.  was named second team All-Big Sky Conference. He averaged 12.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.6 steals per game while shooting .515 from the field for the Vikings. In league play, those numbers went up to a team-best 14.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and .523 shooting... the backcourt of SR Gs Qiant Myers and Jaylin Henderson was an excellent combination as both earned honorable mention All-Big Sky. Myers led the Big Sky Conference in assists with 6.1 per game while scoring 10.8 points. He also had 31 steals and 20 blocked shots. Henderson led the Vikings in scoring (13.0 ppg) and three-point field goals (56) while adding 3.8 rebounds, 41 steals and 19 blocked shots.

It was an improvement over the 17-15 record of a season ago and second straight year the Vikings had improved their record... at one point PSU was seven games over .500 for the first time in seven seasons... PSU's third-place finish in league was its best since 2011-12.

MINOTT NAMED BIG SKY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR AS FOUR VIKINGS EARN HONORS
The breakout story of the season for the Portland State Vikings got a little bit better when center Tre-Vaughn Minott has been named the Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Minott is one of four Vikings to earn post-season honors as the league released its All-Conference teams for 2024-25.

Minott, a 6-9 senior, was named the Big Sky's best defensive player and, appropriately, selected to the All-Defensive team. Senior forward Terri Miller Jr. earned second team All-Big Sky Conference honors, while senior guards Jaylin Henderson and Qiant Myers were named Honorable Mention All-Big Sky. Voting was done by league coaches.

Leading the league's best defense, Minott had to be an easy choice for defensive honors. He blocked 54 shots on the season (1.74 per game) and changed countless others while patrolling the paint. Minott ranked second in blocks in the Big Sky, averaged 7.6 rebounds to rank third, made 24 steals and scored 7.6 points per game on .669 shooting. On top of that, he led the Vikings to a school-record 157 blocked shots and set his own school record with 44 dunks.

A native of Montreal, Minott's effort was the catalyst for a Viking defense that led the Big Sky in scoring defense (65.8), field goal percentage defense (.419), three-point defense (.274), turnovers forced (13.1), steals (7.4) and blocks (4.4) in league games.

Minott becomes Portland State's first Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Year since Scott Morrison won the honor in 2007-08. Also winning Defensive POTY for PSU was Seamus Boxley in 2003-04 and 2004-05.

Miller Jr., a 6-8 forward from Fresno, averaged 12.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.6 steals per game while shooting .515 from the field for the Vikings. In league play, those numbers went up to a team-best 14.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and .523 shooting.

The backcourt of Myers and Henderson was an excellent combination. Myers, a 6-5 guard from Fresno, led the Big Sky Conference in assists with 6.1 per game while scoring 10.8 points. He also had 31 steals and 20 blocked shots. Henderson, a 6-3 guard from Wichita, KS, led the Vikings in scoring (13.0 ppg) and three-point field goals (56) while adding 3.8 rebounds, 41 steals and 19 blocked shots.

Those four filled out the Vikings' starting lineup, along with senior forward Isaiah Johnson, who had a big season of his own, averaging 11.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, with 34 steals, 18 blocks and a .531 shooting percentage.

HOT SHOTS
  • FRONT RUNNERS: With a 13-1 home record, Portland State trailed in only five of 14 home games this season, winning wire-to-wire in nine games. In a total of 560 minutes played in Viking Pavilion, the Vikings trailed for only 67 minutes and 59 seconds. And the Vikings' lone home loss came by a single point.
  • DEFENDING THE BIG SKY: Portland State led the Big Sky in scoring defense (69.6), field goal percentage defense (.427), blocked shots (4.9), steals (8.3), turnovers forced (14.5) and turnover margin (+1.8)... in Big Sky games, those numbers are even better with PSU allowing only 65.8 points, .419 shooting, .274 three-point shooting, with 4.4 blocks and 7.4 steals to lead in each category.
  • DEFENDING THE SHIP: Portland State held home opponents to 60.4 points per game, .370 field goal shooting and .260 three-point shooting. The Vikings forced an average of 14.7 turnovers, making 6.1 blocked shots and 9.0 steals per game. PSU had a +19.0 scoring margin at home.
  • BLOCK PARTY: Portland State established a new school record with 157 blocked shots for the season in 32 games. The previous mark was 153 in 32 games in 2006-07... PSU averaged 4.91 blocks per game to lead the Big Sky... Portland State had a season-high nine blocked shots in a win at Pacific (12/18) and has four games of eight blocks this season... SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott had a career-high four blocked shots five times (Wofford, Denver, Weber State, Eastern Washington, Northern Colorado) and ranked second in the Big Sky and 43rd in the nation at 1.74 per game.
  • EVERYBODY PLAYS, NEARLY EVERYBODY STARTS: On Head Coach Jase Coburn's teams everybody plays... and nearly everybody starts at some point as Coburn routinely adjusts lineups based on a myriad of factors. In his 126 games as head coach, Coburn has started 42 different lineups... of the 50 active players on Coburn's four teams, 40 have started - including 9 of 11 this season.
  • TRENDY: Portland State was 14-3 when leading at halftime... the Vikings are 15-4 when out-rebounding an opponent and 16-3 when out-shooting an opponent... PSU was 7-6 in games decided by six points or less.
  • THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME: Portland State went 13-1 at home this season its best record ever at home in the Big Sky era (also 13-1 in 1998-99 and 2007-08)... the Vikings won the last 11 in a row, and the only loss came by a single point... PSU's Big Sky Conference home record was perfect (9-0), something accomplished only three times previously (1997-98, 8-0; 2004-05, 7-0; and 2007-08, 8-0), but never done with a 10-team conference.

SHOOT YOUR SHOT
  • HIGH PERCENTAGE SHOTS, PART 1: SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott was near a school record for field goal percentage in a season with .669... along the way, he also tied the school record for consecutive field goals made (12), set twice previously... the school record is .671, set by former NFL star (yes, NFL star) Julius Thomas in 2009-10. JT also holds the second and third spots in the field goal percentage list (.643, 2008-09 and .639, 2006-07), and of course the career shooting record (.663, 2006-10).
  • HIGH PERCENTAGE SHOTS, PART 2: SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott (yes, him again) set a new record for dunks in a season (44). No wonder he had such a great shooting percentage. However, even if you take the dunks out, he shot .520 from the field... Minott's five dunks in a single game, Jan. 11 vs. Idaho is also a school record... the previous record for a season was 40, by Sal Nuhu in 2018-19.
  • HIGH PERCENTAGE SHOTS, PART 3: The Vikings had 123 dunks on the season, smashing the school record of 84, set in 2018-19.
  • HIGH PERCENTAGE SHOTS, PART 4: Portland State .473 as a team... leading the way were SR C Tre-Vaughn Minott (.669), SR F Isaiah Johnson (.531), SR F Hayden Curtiss (.532), JR F Isaac Brice (.600) and SR F Terri Miller Jr. (.515).
