Maureen Whitney Assumes Full Leadership of Women’s Soccer Program; Katie Burton Transitions to Administrative Role

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland State Athletic Department announced a leadership change in its women's soccer program on Wednesday. Over eight seasons together, the coaching duo of Katie Burton and Maureen Whitney compiled a 39-78-16 (.353) overall record and a 23-34-11 (.419) mark in Big Sky Conference play. They leave a legacy as the second-winningest coaches in program history, securing 39 career victories.

Burton will transition to an administrative role as the Associate Athletic Director of Internal Operations, a move that aligns with her long-term career goals. Whitney will take full leadership of the soccer program, continuing to guide and serve it with pride.

"Katie and Maureen have both been incredibly dedicated to our women's soccer program," said Matt Billings, Portland State's Athletic Director. "Coach Whitney has played a key role in our success since joining the program in 2017. We are excited about the future of Viking women's soccer under her leadership, and have no doubt that her experience as both a coach and former player will continue to elevate the program to new heights."

Burton and Whitney's combined leadership has been instrumental in the program's growth. During their tenure, the Vikings reached five Big Sky Conference tournaments, including three semifinal appearances. They also mentored 16 players who earned All-Big Sky honors, with standout selections such as Sienna Higinbotham (2023, midfielder) and Liv Frazier (2024, defender) making the first team. In 2024, Aliayha Saldana was named the Big Sky Freshman of the Year, further illustrating the coaching staff's ability to develop talent.

"I've had the privilege of working with Coach Burton the past several years and we're grateful for the energy and dedication she brought to our program," Billings added. "We look forward to seeing her apply that same enthusiasm and commitment in her new role within the athletic department."

Under Burton and Whitney's guidance, the Vikings also earned 13 Big Sky Player of the Week honors, including five in the 2017 season alone. Their leadership and commitment to the development of student-athletes have left a lasting impact on the program.
