BOZEMAN, Mont. — Since 2016, no Viking men's track & field athlete has had a better showing at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships than
Dieumerci Migani. Eight years. A day after setting the school record in the men's 100 meters, Migani set his second school record in as many days Saturday at the Bobcat Track & Field Complex while becoming the first Viking ever to crack 50 feet in the triple jump.
Â
The school record in the triple jump came as Migani placed fourth in the competition. That was a few hours before he placed seventh in the finals of the 100 meters, and a day after he placed fifth in the long jump. Altogether, Migani's 11 points individually mark the best showing by a Viking men's athlete at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships since Spenser Schmidt scored 11 points at the 2016 conference meet. Migani and Schmidt now stand tied for the sixth-best scoring output by a Viking at a single outdoor meet.
Â
The thing that would separate Migani from Schmidt would be the two school records. Consider this, no Viking men's athlete coming into this weekend's Big Sky Outdoor Championships owned more than one school record outdoors. Migani stands alone with his pair of records, then, and set both within 24 hours of each other.
Â
The triple jump record came initially on Migani's fifth attempt of the competition. He jumped 49-11.25 (15.22m) on that attempt, passing Chance Whitehurst, who had held the record at 48-11.75 (14.93m) since 2018. Migani wasn't done, though, as he surpassed that with the first 50-foot jump in school history, soaring to 50-00.75 (15.26m) on his sixth and final attempt. It capped a field series in which Migani improved on all six attempts he made.
Â
Migani's record jump may also extend his season past Saturday's Big Sky Outdoor Championships. He'll have to wait and see what results come in from other conference meets, but his mark would have ranked him 39th in the NCAA west region based on results coming into the weekend. That's more than enough to finish in the top 48, which will qualify for the NCAA West Prelims in Fayetteville, Ark., May 22-25.
Â
For comparison's sake, the 48th-best mark in the west last season was 49-09.75 (15.18m). In 2022, it was 49-08.25 (15.14m). Migani's mark Saturday would have qualified him in either year. However, in 2021, the 48th-best mark was 50-01.75 (15.28m), a little bit beyond Migani's record jump. So, he remains on the qualifying bubble until all results are posted Monday.
Â
Migani returned to the track for the Viking men's 4x400-meter relay that didn't score but still set a seasonal best by nearly 10 seconds while finishing in 3:21.91. Migani ran the anchor leg while Eman Kargo,
Amir Ahmed and
Abdinajib Abade preceded him. The group ran the best 4x400-meter relay by the Viking men since 2017 when Christian Wood, Ben Richardson, Donté Robinson and Mitchell Gable finished in 3:16.98 at the OSU High Performance Meet that season.
Â
The Viking women posted their best 4x400-meter relay time since 2016 while setting a huge seasonal best of their own despite not scoring. Hare kicked the Vikings to the big finish, making up a 15- to 20-meter deficit in a head-to-head race against Eastern Washington in the opening heat of the event and eventually winning by nearly two and a half seconds.
Ashley Peterson,
Ahmeah Brown and
Ania Kapustka preceded Brown. They combined to finish in 3:56.92, more than seven seconds faster than their previous best this season. It was the best 4x400-meter relay for the Viking women since Roazena Miller, Dejuanae Toliver, Genna Settle and Rachel Vinjamuri set the school record at 3:46.38 at the Mondo Mid-Major in 2016.
Â
In the field,
Noah Meucci didn't score, but still posted his No. 2 mark in the men's hammer this season with a best throw of 153-06 (46.80m). That placed him 17th overall in the competition. He returned to the field for the shot put later in the day and set a personal best by close to two inches while finishing with a best throw of 43-05.25 (13.24m). That still wasn't enough for Meucci to score for the Vikings, as he placed 17th again, but completed a three-event meet for him in which he posted his season's No. 2 mark or better in the shot put, discus or hammer.
Â
The Big Sky Outdoor Championships closes the collegiate season for all but Migani, who will learn his fate for the NCAA West Prelims Monday. The rest of the Vikings will either close their season with the Big Sky Outdoor Championships, or compete one last time at the Portland Track Festival, June 8-9, at Lewis & Clark's Eldon Fix Track.
