GREELEY, Colo. — It's not quite the
Titanic meme – "it's been 84 years…" – but a couple of Portland State track & field runners ended long droughts for the Vikings Saturday at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships.
Bára Stýblová became the first Viking since current volunteer assistant
Bianca Martin in 2013 to score in both the 800 and 1,500 meters at a single conference outdoor meet. Stýblová pulled off the feat behind a fifth-place finish in the finals of the 1,500 meters (4:40.97), then came back less than 90 minutes later to place sixth in the finals of the 800 meters (2:12.68).
Only Stýblová, Martin and Staci Bielenberg, who did it in both 2005 and 2006, have pulled off the double for the Vikings. Stýblová was also the first Viking since Sarah Dean in 2014 to score in the 1,500 meters, and the first since Martin in 2013 to score in the outdoor 800 meters.
Jordan MacIntosh ended an even longer drought by scoring in the finals of the men's 1,500 meters. MacIntosh became the first Viking since Brandon Lopez in 2006 to score in the event, placing fifth in 3:52.37. That time was especially strong given the altitude. Run at sea level, it would have been in the 3:47 range, which would have put MacIntosh closer to the school record of 3:45.89 than any one has been since Jeremy Park set the record in 2001.
Outside of those, the Vikings also narrowly missed scoring opportunities from a few other athletes Saturday.
Alex Barbour nearly added another point for the Vikings in the women's 1,500 meters, placing ninth in 4:48.17.
Laura Beghin finished just two spots back of Barbour, crossing the line 11th in 4:52.08.
Gabrielle Bartlett, meanwhile, nearly scored in the finals of the women's pole vault, instead placing ninth with a clearance at 11-07.00 (3.53m). Bartlett's height marked her second-best mark of the season, trailing only her school record of 11-09.75 (3.60m) at the Larry Byerly L&C Invite on April 14.
Ahliah Nordstrom added four feet to her seasonal best in the discus, throwing 126-10 (38.66m) on her third attempt of the day. Nordstrom's mark put her just 22 inches from the current No. 10 mark in the discus at Portland State, which Vanessa Johnson set at 128-08 (39.22m) in 2006.
Abdi Ibrahim and
Cam McChesney closed out the meet for the Vikings in the finals of the men's 5k. The pair placed 21st and 22nd, respectively, in times of 15:26.39 and 15:32.14.
The Vikings will next compete at the NCAA West Prelims, May 24-27, in Sacramento, Calif. Four Vikings – MacIntosh in the men's steeplechase; Stýblová, Barbour and
Tatum Miller in the women's steeplechase – entered the weekend in qualifying position. The qualifying window ends Sunday, so if the four remain ranked among the top 48 in their respective events, they'll be assured of a spot at the meet. Even if they're a few spots out of the top 48, they still might make it depending on whether anyone in front of them scratches out.
Entries will be finalized Thursday, May 18.

NEWBERG, Ore. — The Portland Distance Carnival provided a swan song to the majority of the Portland State track & field team Saturday, as several Vikings got one last race in before the end of the season.
Weronika Stanczak went out with a bang, posting a big personal best in the women's 1,500 meters. Stanczak finished in 4:52.72, more than 17 seconds faster than her first collegiate 1,500-meter race, which came two weeks ago at the OSU High Performance Meet.
Taylor Nichols also shaved half a second off her personal best in the women's 800 meters, finishing in 2:23.48. Nicholas has now set at least one personal best at each of the last three meets at which she competed, including a 1,500-meter personal best of 4:47.60 at last week's Portland Twilight that was run on the same track as Saturday's meet.
Jake Schulte narrowly missed setting a personal in the men's 1,500 meters, as his time of 4:07.80 Saturday was only .14 seconds off his time from the L&C Spring Break Open on March 18.
Pat Roos was also a half-second off his personal best in the 1,500 meters with a finish in 4:09.28 Saturday.
Travis West, one of the Portland State football players that competed for the Vikings' track team this season, closed out his track season with a third-place finish in the men's 100 meters while finishing in 11.24 seconds. That's not far off the personal best of 11.15 seconds he set two weeks earlier at the OSU High Performance Meet, which was an improvement of close to half a second at the time.
Edward Niyongere – fresh off setting personal bests in the high jump and triple jump while competing in three different field events Friday – finished the 100 meters in 11.61 seconds. That's Niyongere's second-best mark of the season, trailing only his personal best of 11.32 seconds at the OSU meet.
Isa Swain capped the day for the Vikings in the women's 10k, her first-ever attempt at the distance to close out her freshman season. Swain finished in 37:57.12, good enough to place them fifth on the all-time freshman list at Portland State in the 10k.
