SEATTLE, Wash. — Every time a Portland-based athlete competes well in Seattle, the Portlandia statue sheds a happy tear.
Such is the rivalry between the two cities in the Pacific Northwest.
The Portland State track & field team has done its part this indoor season. Two weeks after the Vikings set 10 all-time top 10 marks at the UW Invitational – including the school record in the women's Distance Medley Relay – the Vikings set another eight Friday on the first day of the Husky Classic.
The eight top 10 marks came across only four events between the men's and women's 3k and 5k.
The trio of
Alex Barbour,
Tatum Miller and
Bára Stýblová provided three of the eight in the women's 3k. Viking fans could have almost relied on them to do just that coming into Friday's race. The trio combined with
Wendy Hare for the record in the DMR at the UW Invitational, then doubled back the next day to set the second (Barbour), fourth (Stýblová) and 10th (Miller) marks all time in the indoor mile.
Barbour, again, led the trio Friday, as she won her heat of the 3k with a dramatic final push down the home straightaway. Oklahoma State's Emily Carter passed Barbour at the bell, but then looked over her shoulder at Barbour with 50 meters to go. That served as a signal to Barbour that Carter was tiring, and Barbour took advantage, picking up her pace to pass Carter in the final 25 meters.
Barbour's time of 9:28.05 marked a 10-second personal best for her and moved her up to second all time at Portland State.
Miller and Stýblová moved up to sixth and seventh all time with their finishes in 9:46.37 and 9:48.86, respectively. Miller placed third in her heat while setting a 16-second personal best with her finish. Stýblová, meanwhile, ran with the leaders of her heat until late, but still set a 21-second personal best with her finish.
Cam McChesney followed those three with an all-time mark in the men's 3k. McChesney ran with the lead group until things started to spread out with three laps to go. He still finished sixth in his heat in 8:20.85, moving him up to sixth all time at Portland State in the event.
The all-time mark was a bit of redemption for McChesney. Just six days ago, he ran the 3k in 8:38.48 at the WSU Open. Friday, he shaved more than 18 seconds off that time with his finish at the Husky Classic.
The next two top 10 marks came from the women's 5k where
Jamie Zamrin and
Abi Swain finished in 16:58.07 and 17:27.74. Zamrin became just the third Viking to crack 17 minutes in the women's 5k, while setting a 27-second personal best with her time. Swain, meanwhile, beat their personal best by 32 seconds while moving up to sixth all time in the indoor 5k at PSU with their finish.
And just as Zamrin set the No. 3 time in the women's 5k,
Josh Jarpey matched her with the No. 3 time in the men's 5k. Jarpey finished in 14:33.14, nearly a minute faster than his outdoor best in the 5k.
Evan Peters, now fourth all time in the men's 5k after Jarpey's finish, followed him in 14:53.81.
Alex Solberg, meanwhile, moved up to 10th all time with his finish in 15:16.01.
Hare didn't set an all-time top 10 mark, but she still had one of the stronger outings of any Vik Friday. Hare ran three times on the day, and she set a personal best all three times. She opened with a personal best of 9.23 seconds in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles. She'd lower that to 9.15 seconds in the finals of the event, then come back less than two hours later and ran a personal best of 26.10 seconds in the 200 meters.
Hare will return to the track for a fourth time Saturday, as she'll open the day for the Vikings in the women's 400 meters at 11 a.m. The men's and women's mile come after that, followed by the men's and women's 800 meters.
The Vikings will look to add more top 10 marks in those events Saturday. They have the motivation certainly as Portland-based athletes competing in Seattle.
