PORTLAND, Ore. — On the eve of their 2023-24 season opener, the Portland State women's basketball team drifted one eye towards its future Wednesday, signing 5-8 guard Kyleigh Brown.
Â
Brown, a local product out of Silverton High School in Silverton, Ore., brings a full trophy case to Portland State with her. In her first three years of high school ball, Brown has already been named Player of the Year for her league as a junior when she was also an all-state selection and reached 1,000-career points. Additionally, Brown earned second-team all-state honors as a sophomore during the 2021-22 season, while she was a first-team all-league selection as a freshman and sophomore.
Â
"Kyleigh is a smooth, lefty combo guard that finds a way to score the basketball in a variety of ways," Portland State head coach
Chelsey Gregg said of Brown. "She plays with a chip on her shoulder and we believe her best basketball is still ahead of her. We're really excited to have her join the Viking family."
Â
Brown adds to what should be an embarrassment of riches for the Vikings at the guard position for their 2024-25 season. Among others, Brown will join 2023 Big Sky preseason MVP
Esmeralda Morales, 2021 Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year
Mia 'Uhila, 2023 Hawai'i Gatorade Player of the Year
Laynee Torres-Kahapea, and
Alaya Fitzgerald, who will likely be a three-year starter by that point.
