SEATTLE, Wash. — The Portland State track & field program competed in five events at the UW Invitational this weekend. In all five events, they had at least one athlete set an all-time top 10 mark.
Can't beat that as a program.
Friday, a school record in the women's DMR highlighted the day at Dempsey Indoor Facility for the Vikings. Saturday, it was a pick 'em as far as selecting a highlight.
Jamie Zamrin opened the day with the No. 9 mark in the women's 3k, but a trio of Vikings also set top 10 marks in the men's 3k and women's mile.
The highest all-time mark Saturday belonged to
Alex Barbour in the women's mile. She finished in 4:47.97, giving her the No. 2 time in PSU history. Barbour ranks second only to
Katie Camarena, who earned NCAA second-team All-American honors in the mile last season. It's tough for anyone to top Camarena's record, as she not only set the school record but also the Big Sky Conference record in the mile last season, finishing in 4:32.27.
Barbour also ran the anchor leg of the Vikings' record-setting women's DMR Friday. She leaves this weekend with a school record, the No. 2 time at PSU in the women's mile, and the No. 8 time within Big Sky Conference history in the women's DMR.
A pretty productive weekend.
Bára Stýblová and
Tatum Miller joined Barbour on the record-setting DMR team last night and followed her again in the women's mile as they, too, set top 10 marks at the distance. Stýblová ran in the same heat as Barbour and finished in 4:52.56 to move up to fourth all time in the mile at Portland State.
Miller ran in the first heat of the mile. She led from the start and then kicked away from everyone else on the penultimate lap to win her heat by seven seconds. Miller won in 5:02.29, setting a new personal best by nine seconds and moving her up to 10th all time at Portland State.
Three more top 10 marks came in the men's 3k for the Vikings.
Ben Drew led the team there, as he finished in 8:16.50 to move up to fourth all time in the event.
Josh Jarpey followed less than two seconds behind Drew in 8:18.43, moving him up to fifth all time.
Jordan MacIntosh and
Keynan Abdi set the top two times in the men's 3k at a meet in Seattle last season. With Drew and Jarpey's marks Saturday, four of the Vikings' top five times in the men's 3k have now come in the past two seasons.
Abdi Ibrahim added another top 10 mark in the 3k, as he finished 8:22.71 to move up to eighth all time.
Sam Lingwall, who ran in the same heat as the other three, didn't get a top 10 mark, but still set a 15-second personal best with his finish in 8:30.87.
Zamrin set the tone for the day, as she set the No. 9 time in the women's 3k while winning her heat by more than a second. Zamrin finished in 10:00.49, coincidentally bumping teammate Miller out of the top 10 in the 3k.
Abi Swain finished in 10:08.84, putting them two seconds off their personal best, while
Jalen Marcil opened her season with a time of 10:40.41.
The Vikings will next compete at the Portland Indoor Two on Feb. 5. They'll return to Seattle for the Husky Classic, Feb. 10-11.
Considering how this trip to Seattle went, Viking fans might want to circle that one.
