THE OPENING TIP

The Portland State Vikings host their home opener on Wednesday night in the midst of an extremely challenging start to the 2022-23 season. The Vikings play six of their first seven games away from home and will play four games against Power 5 conference opponents.

The Vikings (0-2) come off a pair of road losses against two quality teams to open the season, losing at Portland, 98-91, then at defending WAC regular season champion Seattle, 83-71, last week. Wednesday's game comes against The Evergreen State College (0-2), a NAIA member of the Cascade Collegiate Conference.

For the second year in a row Evergreen will serve as Portland State's home-opening opponent. The Vikings trounced the NAIA Geoducks, 100-44, just over a year ago at Viking Pavilion. PSU will go into the game seeking more consistent shooting and rebounding than they had in the first two games. PSU excelled in a familiar area - defensive pressure - against Portland and Seattle. The Vikings had a +8.0 turnover margin which is attributable as much to good ball handling (only 16 turnovers committed in two games) as it is to the defense (32 turnovers forced).

Viking fans will see a new-look team under second-year Head Coach Jase Coburn. Ten of the 14 players on the roster are newcomers. SR G Cameron Parker, a native of Portland, had a big impact in the opening week, playing all but two of the 80 minutes contested. Parker is averaging 18.5 points and 4.5 assists to lead the team. JR G Jorell Saterfield scored 19 points at Seattle and is averaging 14.5 points and 4.5 rebounds. Off the bench, JR G Isiah Kirby (11.0 ppg) and JR F Hunter Woods (9.5 ppg, 11.0 rpg) were key players as well.

This week's game is one of four non-conference home contests for the Vikings. The other three come after Thanksgiving. PSU and Evergreen will tip it off at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at Viking Pavilion. The game will air on ESPN+ with live statistics at www.ViksLive.com.

COMING UP

The Vikings play at Oregon State on Nov. 19. That game tips off at 7 p.m. and is televised on the Pac-12 Network.

PSU competes in the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament on Nov. 24-27 at the Moda Center, Memorial Coliseum and Chiles Center in Portland. The Vikings will play Gonzaga on Thanksgiving Night at 9:30 p.m.

Portland State plays only four non-conference home games, but due to the matchup at UP and the PKL will play eight non-conference games in the city of Portland.
