Box Score EUGENE, Ore. – The Portland State men's tennis team opened its 2022 season shorthanded on Friday, falling to Boise State 7-0. The Vikings had just four players active in the dual, causing them to forfeit three matches.
Despite playing with two doubles teams, PSU gave the Broncos a run for their money to begin the day. Tommy Hsu and Sam De Vries earned their first win of the season, defeating BSU's Jan Lucca Marquardt and Simon Arca Costas 6-3 at the No. 2 position. A victory on court one would've secured the doubles point for the Vikings but Oliver Richards and Oliver Fernandez came up just short, dropping their match 7-5 to Caden Moorgart and Jesse Haas.
Portland State faced the difficult task of recovering from a 3-0 deficit after two default singles matches were awarded to BSU. Following wins at the top two spots, Boise State extended its lead to five. De Vries and Fernandez made it difficult for the Broncos to earn the final two points, pushing their opponents to tiebreakers. De Vries was edged out 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-5) at No. 3, while Fernandez was defeated 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6), resulting in the win for Boise State.Â
The Vikings will return to action on Monday as they take on the Ducks in Eugene (6 p.m.).
