ST. PAUL, Minn. — Jordan MacIntosh has a Minnesota "M" tattooed on his right thigh after competing for the Golden Gophers for the past four years. Friday at the Roy Griak Invitational, MacIntosh left his mark on Minnesota as he led the Portland State men to a seventh-place finish while placing ahead of all but one of his former Minnesota teammates in the men's gold 8k.
MacIntosh's strong homecoming helped the Viking men beat three other USTFCCCA regionally ranked teams in Tennessee (5th in the South Region), South Dakota State (7th in Midwest Region) and Georgia Tech (8th in South Region). Friday's 21-team field featured 10 regionally ranked teams, including the Vikings at 14th in the west, as well as three nationally ranked teams between BYU (3rd), Iowa State (10th) and Michigan State (26th).
The Viking women beat three other regionally ranked teams in their own race Friday, even though they dropped from the regional rankings following the preseason.
Katie Camarena led the Viking women to an eighth-place finish in the women's gold 6k, ahead of Wyoming (13th in Mountain Region), South Dakota (14th in Midwest Region) and Nevada (14th in Mountain Region). The women's field was similarly deep, as the Vikings competed among 10 regionally ranked teams and three nationally ranked teams in Michigan State (6th), Minnesota (10th) and Iowa State (30th).
The showing gives some legitimacy to the Vikings, after they hadn't competed for three weeks following their season opener at the Viking Rust Buster. MacIntosh and Camarena set school records in the men's 6k and women's 4k, respectively, at the Rust Buster, but that was against a small field at the beginning of the season. Friday's Roy Griak Invitational represented the Vikings' first chance to mix it up in a large, talented field, with a couple of weeks of race-pace training under their belts.
MacIntosh equated himself well while placing 12th overall in the men's 8k, finishing in 24:52.2. MacIntosh held steady near the top throughout the race, as he was 13th after the opening mile and 15th after the 5k.
The other Vikings moved up steadily throughout the race, catching people on the hilly Les Bolstad Course.
Josh Snyder placed second for the Viking men while moving up from 44th after the opening mile to 29th by the end of the race, when he finished in 25:15.2.
Keynan Abdi, the Vikings' third finisher on the men's side, made a massive jump between the opening mile split and the 3k, going from 105th at the mile to 53rd at the 3k. Abdi then moved up another 10 spots to 43rd by the 5k split, before finishing 42nd overall in 25:29.4.
Dom Morganti moved up more than any other Viking during the race while finishing as the Vikings' fourth runner. Morgani sat in 177th after the opening mile, and was still in 155th at the 3k. Morganti went mad from there, as he moved up 49 spots by the 5k to sit in 106th place, then dropped another 23 runners while finishing 83rd in 26:04.6.
Luke Ramirez stayed steadier throughout the race, though he still dropped a few runners over the latter stages while closing out the team score as the Vikings' fifth runner. Ramirez moved up nine spots from the 3k to the 5k, then another 14 from the 5k to the finish, while placing 104th overall in 26:24.9.
Evan Peters and
Drew Seidel followed as the Vikings' sixth and seventh runners, respectively, as they finished 166th and 215th in times of 27:12.6 and 29:03.3. Seidel was making his return to competing in a Viking singlet, after injuries have dogged him since he was the Vikings' top runner as a freshman during the 2018 cross country season.
Camarena, like MacIntosh, showed her race savviness and experience while leading the Viking women. Camarena, the 2021 Big West Women's Track Athlete of the Year while at UC Santa Barbara, dropped 14 runners over the latter half of the race while placing 24th overall in 21:50.6.
Camarena's low stick helped lead a youthful Viking women's team that featured three runners behind her that were making their Portland State debuts.
Maya Irving,
Liza Sajn and
Natalia Martino all ran their first races as Vikings Friday, as they finished as the team's second, fourth and sixth runners, respectively.
Irving made a big jump to follow Camarena in the Vikings' lineup, as she moved up 32 spots over the latter half of the race to place 40th overall in 22:14.1.
Hunter Storm, a senior, followed Irving at 42nd overall in 22:16.7, moving up 10 spots from where she was at the 3k split.
Sajn finished 58th overall in 22:31.9, while sophomore
Tatum Miller – in just her third cross country race as a Viking – placed 69th overall in 22:43.5. Miller dropped 17 runners over the latter half of the race, as she was 86th at the 3k split.
Martino closed out the Vikings' contingent at 87th overall in 23:00.4.
The Roy Griak Invitational was the first of two meets for the Vikings Friday, as the team will also compete this evening at the Mike Johnson Classic in Monmouth, Ore. The women's 6k starts at 5 p.m. at the Mike Johnson Classic, while the men's 8k follows at 5:45 p.m. The Vikings will then compete next on Oct. 16, when they head to the Sant Clara Bronco Invitational in Santa Clara, Calif., and the L&C Invite in Portland.
