Vikings Complete Regular Season With Shutout Win Over Seattle

Box Score The Portland State Vikings capped off their regular season with a shutout win over Seattle University, 7-0, on Friday, giving them momentum heading into next weekend's Big Sky Championship Tournament.
 
With the win, PSU ends the year 9-10 overall, including 3-1 in home matches. The Vikings were 3-1 in Big Sky Conference play and will now head to the Big Sky Championship Tournament, May 1-2 in Phoenix. They are the number-two seed from the North Division and will play the number-one seed from the South, Northern Arizona, on May 1 at 8 a.m.
 
Portland State's third shutout win of the season began in doubles play. Capucine Sanoner and Makoto Ohara needed only 25 minutes to win their number-one doubles match, 6-1, over the Redhawks' Hannah Gianan and Michelle Bader. For Sanoner, it was her 15th doubles win of the season (15-3), setting a new PSU record.
 
Ashley Ramirez and Gerda Upeniece followed with a 6-3 number-three doubles win over Martina Ascuito and Hannah Grossman. Ramirez improved to 14-5 in doubles play.
 
Peggy Rooke and Jillian Rasmussen of Seattle outlasted Emily Rees and Lotti Meszaros and number two doubles, 6-4. But, the Vikings had already earned the doubles point in the team match.
 
Sanoner came through with the first singles win, a comfortable 6-0, 6-3 win over Rooke. She improved to 10-4 in singles play this season, including 10-3 at number two.
 
Also picking up straight sets wins in singles were Meszaros at number one (6-4, 6-4), Rees at number four (6-4, 6-2) and Ramirez at number six (7-6 (7-4), 6-3).  
 
Upeniece earned the victory at number-six singles in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. The match closed on a gutsy, come-from-behind victory by Ohara at number three, 6-7 (7-2), 6-4, 6-4.
 
Rees is now 12-6 in singles this season. Sanoner is 10-4 and Ramirez is 10-6.

MATCH NOTES

  • PSU has won four of its last six matches, with the two losses by 4-3 and 4-2 scores.
  • Friday's match was the final home match for seniors Ashley Ramirez, Gerda Upeniece and Lotti Meszaros.
  • Portland State also defeated Seattle, 6-1, in Seattle on Feb. 19.
