Vikings Return to Big Sky Action Saturday In Dual With Montana State

PORTLAND – The Portland State men's tennis team will return to its home court this weekend to face Montana State in its second Big Sky Conference dual of the season.  The match is scheduled for 2 P.M. on Saturday at the Tualatin Hills Babette Horenstein Tennis Center. 

The Vikings enter the weekend with a 4-5 record after falling 7-0 in their last two duals to Gonzaga and Washington. PSU is 1-0 in Big Sky action after earning its first victory 5-2 over Eastern Washington on Saturday, Feb. 27. 

 BY THE NUMBERS

  • Through nine matches the Vikings as a whole have a 26-28 (.481) singles record and a 10-16 (.384) record in doubles action
  • Nikola DimitrijevicTommy Edwards, and Tommy Hsu each hold a 5-4 singles record after the first nine matches, winning four of their last six
  • Duo Matteo Fortini and Edwards lead the Vikings with a 5-3 record at No. 1 doubles, winning four consecutive earlier this season 
  • Fortini was the lone Viking to notch a singles' win over MSU last season, earning a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Nejc Sitar at the No. 1 spot

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS

MSU holds a 2-0 record coming into the weekend after the cancelation of its last four duals. Montana State was picked to finish seventh in Big Sky competition prior to the season, coming in two spots behind PSU. The Bobcats will get one more match under their belt before facing the Vikings as they're scheduled to play Seattle University on Friday. Earlier this season Montana State earned 4-3 and 5-2 victories over Idaho State. 

The Vikings will look for just their third win over the Bobcats in program history on Saturday. Montana State leads the all-time series 6-2, after defeating the Vikings during the shortened 2020 season 6-1.
