Box Score EUGENE – The Portland State women's tennis team fell to the University of Oregon 4-3 on Friday in a promising dual match to open its 2021 campaign.
 
PSU's three points against the Ducks were the most scored by the Vikings in the series' history.
 
The loss puts the Vikings at 0-1 on the season while the Ducks move to 1-1.
 
"It was so great to get back on the courts and play a match again," head coach Kyle Russell said. "I was so happy to see the spirit we played with."
 
Competing in the No. 1 doubles spot to debut their collegiate careers were Capu Sanoner and Makoto Ohara. While the match was left unfinished, Russell liked what he saw from the pair.
 
"They got through their nerves quickly and enjoyed it," Russell said. "They played some great tennis today and if this is their starting point, it will be a fun four years."
 
Despite falling 6-2 at the No. 3 doubles spot, Russell praised the efforts of Gerda Upeniece and Ashley Ramirez.
 
"Ashley pulled out a battle of a match and after coming out an eight month retirement, that was cool to see."
 
UO forefitting a match in singles play tied things up at one ahead of the remaining five duals.
 
Capu, the freshman from Marcq-en-Baroeul, France clinched the first collegiate victory of her career over Oregon's Lilliam Mould in thrilling fashion (6-1, 7-6, 7-2).
 
Ramirez locked in her first win as a Viking at No. 5 singles with a 7-5, 6-4 victory. Falling short in their duals were Emily Rees, Lotti Meszaros and Makoto as Oregon clinched the match at 4-3.
 
Ready to lace up again tomorrow, the Vikings will take on Idaho in a neutral non-conference matchup in Eugene (1:30 pm).
