THE OPENING TIP
"Big games" on the Big Sky Conference basketball schedule start to roll in with the regularity of winter storms on the Oregon coast this time of year. Thursday night at Viking Pavilion will be one of those "big games" for Portland State when the Vikings, currently in 7th place in the Big Sky at 7-8, host fourth-place Montana State (8-6).
    Â
PSU is trying to make a late-season push to get into the top five in the league and avoid a first-round Big Sky Tournament game. A trip directly into the quarterfinals would make a three-game run at a Big Sky title much more realistic than facing a first-round game and a four-games-in-four-days scenario. And, although the Vikings are three spots behind MSU, they trail the Bobcats by only a game-and-a-half in the standings. A PSU win on Thursday would pull them within a half-game of Montana State, who would fall no further than fifth depending on the outcome of fifth-place Northern Arizona's (8-7) game at Idaho. In fact, the Vikings could possibly even find themselves in a tie for fifth depending on the outcome of NAU/Idaho and Southern Utah (7-7) at Northern Colorado (10-4).
    Â
So, it is still a bit of shell game for the Vikings as they have five games remaining in their regular season schedule. But if PSU can win what is ahead, particularly on Thursday, they are likely to leapfrog in the standings.
    Â
A Monday night win over Idaho, 90-69, was a great start on that climb. The Vikings were solid for 40 minutes, taking a big first-half lead, then never letting the Vandals within 18 points in the second half on the way to their biggest win over a Division I opponent this season. SR G
Matt Hauser had his second big outing in a row, scoring 24 points with four rebounds, five assists and three steals. PSU shot over 50% and made 11 more steals in another oppressive defensive performance.
    Â
The Vikings, 13-14 overall, are now 8-3 at home this season. They take on a Montana State team that has won two in a row and five of its last seven games. PSU pulled off a 77-76 road win at MSU on Jan. 11. JR G
Holland Woods scored 30 points in that game, including the game-winning shot with 2.4 seconds remaining to play.
    Â
The Bobcats, 14-11 overall, are 4-8 on the road, 3-4 in Big Sky road games. MSU is one of the better defensive teams in the Big Sky Conference, holding opponents to 66.1 points per game and .407 shooting from the field.
    Â
All-Conference guard Harald Frey paces the Bobcats with 17.1 points and 4.8 assists per game.
    Â
Thursday's game with Montana State is a 7:05 p.m. tip-off at Viking Pavilion. The game is televised on Eleven Sports. The Eleven Sports network can be seen on DirecTV channel 623 and CenturyLink channel 646. It will also be live streamed on Pluto TV Channel 532, www.pluto.tv and www.WatchBigSky.com. Live statistics can be found at www.ViksLive.com.
Â
COMING UP
The Big Sky schedule continues with games at Idaho State (Feb. 27) and Weber State (Feb. 29) next week. PSU wraps up the regular season at home hosting Northern Arizona (Mar. 5) and Sacramento State (Mar. 7).
Â
IF THE BIG SKY CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT STARTED TODAY...
The Big Sky Conference Tournament takes place Mar. 11-14 at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, ID. First-round games are on Wednesday, March 11. The top five teams in league play earn a bye into the quarterfinals on Thursday. Last season, the Vikings tied for fourth place and opened against Weber State in a quarterfinal game.
    Â
There are five games to go in the Big Sky regular season. The Vikings are currently in seventh place at 7-8. If the Big Sky Tournament began today, Portland State would be playing 10th-place Idaho (3-11) in a first-round game. A win in the first round would set up a quarterfinal round matchup with the second-place team (currently Eastern Washington/Northern Colorado).
    Â
The Vikings are one game behind fifth-place Northern Arizona (8-7) and a first-round bye.

The game-winner ended a frantic final four minutes that included eight lead changes. MSU's Harald Frey had hit an awkward 15-foot bank shot with 10.9 seconds left to put the Bobcats ahead 76-75. Portland State finished at .484 from the field, .733 at the free throw line. The Bobcats shot .500 from the field and .788 at the line.

WHO IS HOT

Holland Woods has moved into the Big Sky lead for steals with 56.
Â
BOO BOO IS REWRITING THE RECORD BOOK
Portland State point guard Holland "Boo Boo" Woods has set three new Portland State records this season, and now holds four in his career.
• Woods passed the PSU career record for assists in a Dec. 28 win against Northern Colorado. He currently ranks 10th in Big Sky Conference history in assists.
• His second Portland State career record came in a win at Montana State on Jan. 11 when he eclipsed the steals mark. Appropriately enough, he scored 30 points and hit the game-winning shot with 2.4 seconds left in that game.
• Against Montana (1/30), Woods made 21-21 free throws to establish a new school and Big Sky record for most free throws made in a game without a miss. They were also school records for most attempted and most made in a game. Woods finished with a career-high 39 points in the win.
• Ironically, Woods now holds records for free throw and field goal shooting in a game at PSU. His previous record came his freshman season, when he went 10-10 in a win over Eastern Washington (2/3/18), to set a PSU mark for most field goals in a game without a miss.Â
• In addition, Woods became the 19th Viking in history to pass 1,000 career points. He now has 1,282 points to rank sixth all-time. Woods has scored more points than any Viking in the past 15 years.
