THE OPENING TIP
Portland State returns to Viking Pavilion for its longest stretch of home games this season when it hosts second-place Eastern Washington this Saturday.

It's only three home games in a row, but they are quite welcome as the Vikings have played 16 of their first 25 this season away from home. In addition, PSU should come in with some momentum off an impressive 83-71 win at Northern Colorado on Monday. The Vikings have won their last three home games.

PSU (12-13, 6-7) did nearly everything right in the win at UNC. The Vikings shot a season-best .571 from the field and .900 at the free throw line, they out-rebounded the Bears 34-30, and they held the league's most prolific three-point shooting team to 30% from distance. It was a great bounce-back win after a poor outing at Southern Utah on Saturday with extensive travel in between.

SR F Alonzo Walker led a dominant inside game that saw the Vikings score 60 of their 65 points from the field in the paint. Walker had 22 - one off his career high - making 10-15 shots from the field. SR C Sal Nuhu was also big inside with 13 points and eight rebounds. The duo of SR F Rashaad Goolsby and SR G Lamar Hamrick came off the bench for 22 points and 12 rebounds, combining for 9-12 field goals.

Portland State now hopes the win is a harbinger of things to come as it plays five of the final seven conference games at home. The run-up to the Big Sky Tournament starts with a talented Eastern Washington team later this week.

Eastern Washington begins the week at 16-7 overall, 9-3 in the Big Sky Conference. The Eagles are one-half game behind first-place Montana (10-3). Eastern hosts Idaho on Thursday night in Cheney before traveling to play the Vikings on Saturday.

The Eagles are the top offensive team in the Big Sky, averaging 81.6 points per game. A trio of players lead the team including Jacob Davison (17.8 ppg), Mason Peatling (16.1 ppg, 8.6 rpg) and Kim Aiken Jr. (14.0 ppg, 10.1 rpg).

Eastern Washington is also the top road team in the Big Sky with a 7-6 record away from home, including 5-2 in Big Sky games.

Saturday's game is a 7:05 p.m. tip-off at Viking Pavilion. The game will be televised on Eleven Sports and live streamed on Pluto TV Channel 532, www.pluto.tv and www.WatchBigSky.com. Live statistics can be found at www.ViksLive.com.

COMING UP
Portland State remains home for its next two games. The Vikings play Idaho on Monday, followed by Montana State on Feb. 20. The Big Sky schedule continues with games at Idaho State (Feb. 27) and Weber State (Feb. 29). PSU wraps up the regular season at home hosting Northern Arizona (Mar. 5) and Sacramento State (Mar. 7). The Big Sky Conference Tournament takes place Mar. 11-14 in Boise, ID.

IF THE BIG SKY CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT STARTED TODAY...
The Big Sky Conference Tournament takes place Mar. 11-14 at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, ID. First-round games are on Wednesday, March 11. The top five teams in league play earn a bye into the quarterfinals on Thursday. Last season, the Vikings tied for fourth place and opened against Weber State in a quarterfinal game.

There is a long way to go in the Big Sky regular season, but currently the Vikings are tied for seventh place at 6-7 with Weber State. PSU holds the tie-breaker (a 92-76 win) with the Wildcats, so they would be the seventh seed and Weber State would be number eight. If the Big Sky Tournament began today, Portland State would be playing 10th-place Idaho State (3-10) in a first-round game. A win in that game would set up a quarterfinal round matchup with the second-place team (currently Eastern Washington). That is likely to change before the end of the season as seven games remain on the schedule.

The Vikings are one game behind fifth-place Northern Arizona (7-6) and a first-round bye.

HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE
The completion of the Viking Pavilion prior to the 2018-19 basketball season was transformative for the entire Portland State Athletic Program. So far, the results on the court have been better than ever. PSU is 19-6 in the Viking Pavilion (.760 winning percentage). The previous main home court, the old Peter W. Stott Center gym, produced a .721 winning percentage after reinstating basketball and joining the Big Sky Conference between 1996-97 and 2017-18. In all, PSU's four different home venues prior to the Viking Pavilion produced a .709 winning mark.

BOO BOO IS REWRITING THE RECORD BOOK
Portland State point guard Holland "Boo Boo" Woods has set three new Portland State records this season, and now holds four in his career.
• Woods passed the PSU career record for assists in a Dec. 28 win against Northern Colorado.
• His second Portland State career record came in a win at Montana State on Jan. 11 when he eclipsed the steals mark. Appropriately enough, he scored 30 points and hit the game-winning shot with 2.4 seconds left in that game.
• Against Montana (1/30), Woods made 21-21 free throws to establish a new school and Big Sky record for most free throws made in a game without a miss. They were also school records for most attempted and most made in a game. Woods finished with a career-high 39 points in the win.
• Ironically, Woods now holds records for free throw and field goal shooting in a game at PSU. His previous record came his freshman season, when he went 10-10 in a win over Eastern Washington (2/3/18), to set a PSU mark for most field goals in a game without a miss.
• In addition, Woods became the 19th Viking in history to pass 1,000 career points. He now has 1,255 points to rank sixth all-time. Woods has scored more points than any Viking in the past 15 years.
