Vikings To Face Ducks in Eugene in NCAA First Round Friday

PORTLAND, Ore. — The news was the same whether it was leaked, viewed at 2 p.m. or at 4 p.m., the Portland State women's basketball team will open its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2010 against the University of Oregon Friday at 6 p.m. (PT) in Eugene.

The Ducks will host a four-team sub regional at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene after earning the No. 2 seed in the bracket's Portland Regional. The Vikings face the Ducks in the first round as the No. 15 seed, while seventh-seeded Texas and 10th-seeded Indiana will play each other in Eugene at 4 p.m. (PT) Friday.

The winners of the two first round games in Eugene will face each other in the second round of the tournament Sunday, also at Matthew Knight Arena.

The Vikings and Ducks have played each other 37 times before, with the Ducks leading the Vikings 27-10 in the head-to-head series. The Vikings and Ducks last played at the Moda Center in Portland on Dec. 17, 2016 with the Ducks winning 90-46. The Vikings' last win in the series came in 2012, when the Vikings beat the Ducks 87-85 in double overtime. That was the Vikings' first win in the series since 1985.

Friday's game against the Ducks will be the Vikings' first NCAA tournament game since 2010 – the last year the Vikings won the Big Sky tournament. The Vikings faced Texas A&M as a No. 15 seed in the first round that season, losing 84-53 to the Aggies.

The Vikings advanced to the NCAA tournament after winning three straight games en route to the Big Sky tournament title last weekend in Boise's CenturyLink Arena. The Vikings beat fifth-seeded Montana State 68-56 in the quarterfinals Tuesday, and followed with an upset of top-seeded Idaho, 75-59, in the semifinals Wednesday. The Vikings then beat Eastern Washington 61-59 in the championship game Friday after freshman Desirae Hansen hit the game-winning jumper with 3.1 seconds remaining.

The Vikings set the program's Big Sky era record with 25 wins this season, and tied a program record with 14 Big Sky wins. Individually, Courtney West was named Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year, Hansen was named the Big Sky Co-Top Reserve, and seniors Sidney Rielly and Ashley Bolston made the All-Big Sky first and second teams, respectively. Sophomore point guard Kylie Jimenez was named an All-Big Sky honorable mention, and made the All-Big Sky tournament team along with Bolston, the tournament's MVP.
