GREELEY, Colo. — Snow on the ground of Boomerang Golf Course made Saturday's Big Sky Cross Country Championships look more like a cross country skiing competition, but that didn't prevent the Portland State men's team from setting its best finish ever at the meet, relative to the size of the conference.
Â
The Viking men placed seventh out of 11 teams with 223 points, bettering their previous best finish from 2016, when the Vikings placed eighth out of 12 teams. The Viking women, meanwhile, placed eighth with 201 points at the conference meet.
Â
The snow, on top of the 4,600 feet of elevation at which the meet took place, meant placement trumped time even more than it would normally Saturday, as no Viking had a chance at a personal best under the conditions.
Â
Senior transfer
Tom Richardson led the Viking men with a 28th-place finish, crossing the line in the 8k in 28:26.8.
Â
Three Vikings finished in a pack at 47th, 48th and 49th overall after that, as sophomores
Josh Snyder,
Luke Ramirez and
Max Norman finished in 28:57.8, 28:58.3 and 28:59.5, respectively. Ramirez's third-place finish in the Vikings' lineup was his highest finish of the season when all the Vikings' top runners have been competing.
Â
Freshman
Evan Peters closed out the team score as the Vikings' fifth runner, placing 61st overall in 29:35.9. Peters hadn't finished higher than seventh in the Vikings' 'A' lineup before Saturday.
Â
Drew Seidel,
Jason Rae and
Brandon Hippe also competed for the Vikings, finishing 68th, 69th and 71st overall, respectively. Seidel finished in 30:01.7 to lead the group of three, while Rae and Hippe followed in 30:03.4 and 30:07.9.
Â
Hunter Storm and
Delaney White went 1-2 for the Viking women for the fifth straight meet. Storm led the Vikings at 23rd overall, finishing the snow-covered 5k in 19:18.5. White followed at 31st overall in 19:29.6. The Phoebes followed for the Vikings, with
Phoebe Jacques placing 38th overall in 19:48.3 and
Phoebe Brown placing 52nd overall in 20:14.5.
Â
Freshman
Keely Wolf – running her first meet in a Viking singlet – finished as the Vikings' fifth runner, placing 62nd overall in 20:39.5.
Â
Sophomore
Zoe Eberspecher finished 10 seconds back of Wolf at 65th overall in 20:49.5.
Sophie Jones and
Monica Salazar also competed for the Vikings, finishing 73rd and 80th overall in times of 21:43.7 and 22:34.4, respectively.
Â
The Viking runners who did not compete at Saturday's conference meet will close out their seasons at the Beaver Classic in Corvallis, Ore., on Nov. 9. Saturday's conference runners, meanwhile, will next compete at the NCAA West Regional in Colfax, Wash., on Nov. 15. The women run a 6k at 11:30 a.m. (PT) while the men run a 10k at 12:30 p.m. (PT).
