Portland State women's tennis team wrapped up play at the Beach Tennis Winter Invitational on Sunday and also picked up their first win of the young season. Junior Alli Valk was the last Viking on the court and her resiliency earned her a sweet victory.
Valk dropped the opening set of her singles match against CSUN's Ana Fraile Toboso 6-3. After a long weekend for the Vikings, who were playing without three key pieces in their lineup because of injuries, it would have been easy for Valk to throw in the towel.
But she fought back, earning a close 6-4 win in the second set. The momentum allowed her to roll in the third set, taking it 6-1 for the first singles win by a Viking this season.
"She's been waiting for the various parts of her game to come together, and today they did," head coach
Jay Sterling said. "She was a great example today of what it means to be a team player - not fighting like her was on the line, but fighting like her teammates lives were in the line, and as the pressure mounted, she met the challenge, got better and better, and dominated the last parts of the match. It was a great win for her, and I know it will give her a lot of self confidence as we go into the beginning of the season."
The Vikings opened up the day with doubles matches against Long Beach State. Meszaros/Rees fell 6-2 and Valk/Knecht dropped their match 6-1.
Valk's win highlighted the afternoon singles, which pitted PSU and CSUN against each other. She was the only Viking player to win a se, as the other four were also swept on Sunday. At the top spot Lotti Meszaros played a close first set but ultimately fell 6-4, 6-0.
Taylor Rees lost to Skyla Alcon 6-1, 6-4 and Gerda Upeniece fell 6-1, 6-1 in her match. Ashley Knecht also played, falling 6-2, 6-2.
Portland State will have a small break, not returning to action until Feb. 3 on the road against Washington.
