PULLMAN, Wash. – The Portland State women's tennis team claimed the opening doubles point Friday against Washington State and added a singles win, but ultimately fell 5-2 to the Cougars at the Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
The Vikings (3-2) took two points from the Cougars (4-3) for the first time since 2013, winning two doubles matches to secure the opening point and adding a singles victory from freshman Marta Giglio.
The Cougars picked up a win at No. 3 doubles to open the match, leaving the Vikings needing the final two courts to take a 1-0 lead. Nene Uemura and Kasumi Hirayama delivered at No. 2 with a 6-2 win over Eva Alvarez Sande and Martina Puvill. Marta Giglio and Hana Abdelhamid followed with a gritty 7-6 (2) win over Washington State's top duo of Maxine Murphy and Chisato Kanemaki at No. 1 to clinch the point.
WSU responded with five wins in singles play. Giglio accounted for the Vikings' lone singles point, improving to 4-1 on the year with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Yura Nakagawa at No. 3. Uemura pushed Murphy to a third set at No. 2 but couldn't close it out, falling 7-5 in the deciding set.
The Vikings return to action next week, hosting Lewis–Clark State College on Friday, Feb. 27 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center (10 a.m.).
