CHENEY, Wash. — You'd be surprised at how well a Viking can jump.
Â
Ta'mara Richey helped proved just how well Saturday as she set a four-inch seasonal best in the long jump as the Vikings competed at the Pelluer Invitational at Roos Field.
Â
Richey placed second in the women's long jump with a mark of 19-03.50 (5.88m), beating her previous seasonal best of 18-11.25 (5.77m) by more than four inches. Richey's mark puts her right on her progression in the long jump last season, as she jumped 19-04.25 (5.90m) at the Texas Invitational on the same weekend last year. Richey followed that meet with her personal best of 19-09.75 (6.04m) at the Triton Invitational a week later, a mark that ranks Richey fifth all time in the women's long jump at Portland State. Three weeks after that, Richey placed fourth in the long jump at the 2017 Big Sky Outdoor Championships with a best jump of 19-06.25 (5.95m).
Junior newcomer
Saraia Collmer showed the best hops of any Viking at the meet, as she broke the school record in the pole vault with a clearance of 11-03.00 (3.43m). Collmer bettered the record that Lynae Newby set with a clearance of 10-11.75 (3.35m) in 2004. Collmer also broke the school record in the women's indoor pole vault back in February, and now holds both pole vaulting records after less than a year in the Viking program.
Â
Freshman
Taylor Elliott moved into a tie for eighth all time in the women's high jump, matching her classmate
Ceil Dunleavy, who moved into a tie for eighth after the Al Manuel Northwest Dual Invitational two weeks ago. Elliott cleared 5-05.00 (1.65m) Saturday, tying her with Dunleavy, Damaris Tucker (2006) and Erin Kinney (2007). Elliott had moved up to sixth all time in the indoor high jump earlier in the year, but had yet to crack the top 10 outdoors before Saturday. Fellow freshman
Kristen O'Handley moved up to third all time in the indoor high jump, and set a new outdoor seasonal best Saturday with a clearance of 5-03.00 (1.60m).
Â
Junior
Jaron Barrow set an outdoor seasonal best in the men's long jump, as he placed fourth in the competition with a best jump of 22-11.75 (7.00m). Barrow missed out on moving into the top 10 all time in the outdoor long jump by only a centimeter. The current 10th-best mark all time stands at 23-00.00 (7.01m), which Roy Cox set in 1961.
Â
Jean-Luc Toku placed second in the men's triple jump, ahead of Barrow, with a seasonal-best mark of 46-08.75 (14.24m). Toku's mark Saturday beat his previous best this season by an inch and a half, and stands as his best mark in the outdoor triple jump since he set the school record with a jump of 48-07.25 (14.81m) at the Triton Invitational last season.
Â
Several other Vikings set seasonal bests Saturday, including both 4x100-meter relay teams. The Viking women won the 4x100-meter relay in 46.87 seconds, with
Natalie Cummings and
Nia Powdrell running the first two legs, respectively, followed by Richey and O'Handley. The Viking men, meanwhile, placed second in 42.67 seconds, with
Se Min Park,
Justin Desaki,
Kamal-Craig Golaube and
Tay Kilcup running the four legs of the relay.
Â
Golaube also set seasonal or personal bests in his two individual events, the 110- and 400-meter hurdles. Golaube placed second in both events while finishing the 110-meter hurdles in 15.07 seconds and the 400-meter hurdles in 56.89 seconds. Golaube's time in the 400-meter hurdles beat his previous personal best in the event by close to a full second, which he set only two weeks ago at the Al Manuel Northwest Dual Invite.
Â
Golaube just missed out on moving into the top 10 all time in the 400-meter hurdles with his finish, as the current No. 10 time stands at 56.53 seconds – less than four-tenths of a second faster than Golaube's time Saturday.
Â
Freshman
Meggie Karp narrowly missed the top 10 in the women's 800 meters, as she won while making her debut in the event with a time of 2:13.50. Karp finished just under seven-tenths of a second behind the current No. 10 time, which
Nyalual Beng set at 2:12.83 in 2016.Â
Â
The Vikings compete in a pair of high-profile meets next week, as they travel to southern California for the Bryan Clay Invitational, April 18-20, in Azusa, Calif., and the Mt. SAC Relays, April 19-20, in Torrance, Calif.
