Meszaros Wins Twice at ITA Northwest Regional

The Portland State women's tennis team wrapped up its fall season competing against some of the best teams in the country at the ITA Northwest Regional hosted by Stanford this past weekend.

The Vikings picked up some key wins to help take momentum into the offseason. Newcomer Lotti Meszaros continued an impressive fall, one that includes winning the PNW Grass Court Championships, by picking up a first round win against Cal Poly.

Meszaros took down Emily Ackerman 6-1, 6-3 in the round of 128. She then moved on to play the No. 25 player in the country, Vanessa Wong. The Washington Husky rolled past Meszaros 6-0, 6-1 in the second round of the tournament.

She fell down to the consolation bracket, where she defeated Alessia Dario of Fresno State 6-3, 6-3. Meszaros' win helped her finish the weekend 2-1.

While all of the other Vikings dropped their opening round matches, they put together some good results in the consolation bracket. Gerda Upeniece picked up a win, knocking off Hannah Ketcherside from Pacific.

Eszter Zador and Alli Valk each went three sets in their consolation matches before falling in third set tiebreakers.

In the doubles competition, Meszaros teamed up with Nina Nikitovic to advance out of the first round with a win. The team defeated a Big Sky foe from Sacramento State 8-5 to get into the round of 32. Once there, Meszaros/Nikitovic put up a good fight against Washington's Fung/Zupancic. They fell 8-4 to a team that is still competing in the undefeated semifinals on Monday.

The Vikings had another doubles team pick up a close and competitive win in the consolation bracket. Valk/Zador went into a tiebreaker with Gianan/Jung from Seattle. The Vikings emerged victorious, winning the tiebreaker 9-7.

The fall season is now over for the Vikings, who participated in a grass court tournament, hosted a fall event for the first time ever and played some very challenging matches at Long Beach and the ITA Regionals in the hopes of putting together a successful spring season.
