VANCOUVER, Wash. — A season dominated by close matches came to a close with the most lopsided match of the year Sunday, as the Portland State women's tennis team finally got a chance to cruise in a match, beating Bellevue College, 7-0, at Club Green Meadows.
Â
The 7-0 score line almost appears foreign to anyone familiar with the Vikings' season, which featured seven 4-3 matches out of 16 total, including six out of 11 in Big Sky play. The Vikings started the year 0-4 in 4-3 matches, but turned a corner in the latter half of the season, and beat Montana and Sacramento State 4-3 in their final month.
Â
"The thing that makes me the most proud of the team this season is that we kept fighting all the way to the end. We never quit," PSU head coach
Jay Sterling said while reflecting on the season after the match. "We always showed what Portland State tennis is about which is fighting and working to win matches and competing. That's what we did as the season went on and today was a great match to end it.
Â
"Bellevue is a really classy team – good sportsmanship. I think it was a good match for us to finish the season on, work on some things, and have a lot of confidence going into the offseason."
Â
Sunday's match came with a few records for the Vikings, as well, both in singles and doubles.
Â
Junior
Siena Peri and senior
Tracy Dong got the record-breaking started in doubles, as they beat Bellevue College's Moriah Austin and Marissa Kirk 8-0 at line one. The win tied Peri and Dong for the career record for overall doubles wins by a team, and also assured them of finishing with the records for overall doubles win percentage and win percentage at No. 1 doubles.
Â
Additionally, the win eliminated any lingering doubt as to who would be the greatest doubles team in the history of the Portland State women's tennis program, as Peri and Dong will now leave with five career records to their names. All told, Peri and Dong either share or hold the career records for overall wins, overall win percentage, Big Sky wins, wins at No. 1 doubles and win percentage at No. 1 doubles – and Peri holds the career record for individual wins at No. 1 doubles, while Dong holds the individual career record for win percentage at No. 1 doubles.
Â
Peri and Dong's record win in doubles came as part of a doubles sweep for the Vikings, who only dropped one combined game between the three doubles lines.
Â
The Vikings were similarly dominant in singles, too, as they only dropped four combined games across all six singles matches. The Vikings won four of their six singles matches at 6-0, 6-0, and freshman
Sally Partington only dropped one game while winning 6-0, 6-1 at line four.
Â
Sophomore
Taylor Rees was one of the four Vikings to post a double-bagel in singles, as she beat Bellevue's Yuri Takagi 6-0, 6-0 at line six. The win gave Rees a record-breaking 14th career win at line six, moving her past Alexa McDonald, who set the record at 13 from 2012-15. Rees also holds the career record for win percentage at No. 6 singles, as her 14-10 career record gives her a record-setting win percentage of .583.
Â
Rees finishes the season with a team-high nine singles wins, and ended the year with six wins in her last seven singles matches.
Â
Peri, Dong and senior
Sabina-Elena Preda all won their singles matches, 6-0, 6-0, as well, while sophomore
Georgia Dobell beat Bellevue's Candice Canley 6-1, 6-2 at line three.
Â
The Vikings will now head into the offseason having finished their spring season 4-12 overall. The Vikings will lose Dong and Preda to graduation, but should return six of their eight players, including four of their regular starters this season.
Â
Match Notes: The Vikings had never played Bellevue before Sunday, giving them a 1-0 lead in the all-time series between the two teams…Bellevue College is a two-year college that competes in the Northwest Athletic Conference…Preda finishes her career with the second-most singles wins in program history with 31…Dong finishes her career ranked fourth all-time in career singles wins at 28.Â
